loved by laura : what’s on her face? (from urban decay to mary kay!)

I felt inspired by this gorgeous weather to create a simple yet fun look with some new goodies. Its not about using a ton of colour or product to create something fun that will pop, its about using the right products that target the features that you really want to show off. So without further ado here is a breakdown of what’s on my face!

Face:

For a skin like finish, I used Urban Decay Naked Foundation in 6.0, followed by cult fave, NARS Orgasm blush for a beautiful pinky, peach glow. I completed the look with some MAC Bronzer to add a little colour to this pale skin thats begging for sun.

Eyes:
I applied Mary Kay whipped eye colour in “Tiki Hut” on the lids,  and “Seafoam” on the bottom lashline for a pop of colour. I am really into these colours because they go on creamy and have a powder like finish –  plus they are super easy to apply: I used my fingers!

I finished the look with Mary Kay eyeliner in “MK black” (j’adore this pencil, its super creamy and the tip is thin so allows for precise application).

Lips:
A simple swipe of Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss in “red-light/medium”.  LOVE this colour its bright enough so that I can layer it to really pop, or wear it shear for just a touch of colour. If you like versatile lip colours – you NEED this in your life!

I’m loving how quickly I was able to complete this look which took me about 7 minutes. The end look packed a lot of punch all while using easy to use products for a quick face ;)

holiday shop #2 : the stocking stuffer …

When it comes to gifting, I find I have the easiest time with stocking stuffers. For me, stocking stuffers are meant to be those fun, inexpensive, but totally useful items that people want to buy for themselves but never do in favour of items that seem more necessary – I can’t tell you how many times I have left a Shoppers Drug Mart in tears over having to buy cough medicine and diapers over a bold coloured nail polish or a pretty Burts Bees lip colour. Need versus want. Stocking stuffers are meant to be “needed wants”.

Speaking of Shoppers Drug Mart – that’s the answer to your stocking stuffer questions – your local drugstore beauty aisles. SDM, Rexall, even The Superstore, are filled with budget friendly, colourful, and – best of all – quality items that any beauty babe would love to find in her fishnet holiday stocking.

Don’t believe me? Here are a few ideas :

Maybelline The Nudes Palette ( and perhaps, The Smoke Palettes, if you can find it! ) : any chick who values winged liner and mascara would love to have her hands on either of these palettes filled with the right combination of colours. Just under $15 CAD, it’s affordable but screams luxury!

Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick : lipstick makes every girl smile, and with 16 shades to choose from you can mix and match and give that special someone a lipstick wardrobe. Might I suggest Notting Hill Nude, Picadilly Pink, and Heather Shimmer.

Vasanti Kajal Extreme Intense Eye Pencils :  this stocking stuffer is simple (just $18 a pop!) but screams luxe and lovely. These liners come complete with a sharpener and smudging tool on the opposite end which makes this the ultimate tool for dressed up eyes in a flash. Choose the norm core basic black … or do something fun like Graphite Green!

CoverGirl Bombshell Volume LashBlast Mascara : LashBlast is still one of my very favourite mascara lines, and the new two-step system Bombshell Volume Mascara is the perfect present for the lady who loves long and lush lashes. Want to give the recipient a bonus? Why not give a selection of mascaras from the LashBlast line? Team up Bombshell with LashBlast Length and LashBlast Luxe!

Almay Smart Shade Bronzer and Powder Blush : Not that skilled at picking the right colour for that perfect pretty pal? Let’s take the guess work out of the equation for you. During the holiday season, not a single girl can resist fighting off the cold weather by adding in a pinch of colour to the cheeks.   By swirling the three tones in each of the these products, they can sweep on some colour that will adjust to match their complexion. Done and done!

See what you can find in the drugstore beauty aisles? Not to mention, at under $20 a piece,  it’s a beauty goldmine on holiday budget.

Happy Shopping! :)

musings from morgan : glide-on glosses

If there’s one thing that never goes out of season or style, it’s easy makeup that’s made to transition well from day to night. As much as I love my bold matte lipsticks, there’s a special place in my purse for light lip glosses that lean a little more neutral in shade – some days I just need an effortless look to pull together, especially when I’m headed to client meetings or going to be out and about for hours on end.

Two new glosses have landed on my radar in the last few weeks I thought were worth sharing – Stila’s All Day Vinyl Lip Gloss in Terracotta Vinyl, and Almay Color + Care Liquid Lip Balm in Cataloupe Cream.

I’ve previously reviewed Stila’s gloss and wrote about its formula here, so today I’ll focus merely on the colour – it’s a muted rosy brown that’s totally reminiscent of a classic 90s lip, a trend that’s made a surprising return this year. It’s an easy way to make a bold lip statement with a light, neutral feel and the product itself is highly pigmented and long-wearing. Yes, a little sticky, but I find with this particular product a quick blotting of the lips after applying helps reduce that.

The second shade worth checking out is Almay’s liquid lip balm in Cantaloupe Cream. It’s a peachy pink shade that’s very light in pigment but really comfortable on the lips. It’s not a long-wearing product, but given the temperature is dropping and we could all use a bit of extra moisture on the lips this time of year, it’s a nice way to add a hint of colour while keeping your pout hydrated.

The Stila gloss comes in at $32.00 at Sephora.ca, and Almay’s gloss can be found for $8.99 at Well.ca.

recos from regina : almay intense i-Color

Trying eyeshadows that come with more than one colour is a fun experience for me, since even though I have a love of beauty products, I will admith I’m not the most experienced with eyeshadow and am not as savvy about deciding which colours go best together. I generally stick to one eyeshadow colour, black liquid eyeliner and black mascara.

Almay has given ladies like me an entire line to help us out, intense i-color. This line consists of eyeshadows, eyeliners and mascaras that are made for every eye colour.

I had the opportunity to try out the intense i-color eyeshadow in 401 smoky-i for brown eyes and liquid liner in 021 Purple Amethyst. This line is great because the eyeshadow palette is shaped like an eye to show you step-by-step how to apply the product.

The first step is the darkest shade (bottom shade in brown) which goes from the lash to the crease and to be blended upwards. Second is the medium shade (centre shade in shimmering light purple) that goes above the crease, and it’s suggested you blend for a “smouldering effect.”

Finally, the lightest colour (top colour in a light shimmering cream colour) is to be “applied on the brow bone and/or corners of eyes to highlight.” Once complete, you’ve successfully applied an easy smokey eye – just like that!

The liquid liner is great too as it went with the colours of the eyeshadows. This was the first time that I used a purple liquid eyeliner in place of my usual black liner, and it was nice to break out of my comfort zone!

What I really liked about these products were the colours in the palette, the staying power and the price. I generally stick to neutral brown eyeshadows as it’s in my comfort zone, so the purple was a really nice departure from that.

Performance-wise, the product stayed on my eyes for the whole day at work and I received many compliments from staff, customers and my own kids.

I found the price to be reasonable at $9.99 CDN. You can find them at Wal-Mart, Target, Shoppers Drug Mart, Rexall, Loblaws and The Real Canadian Superstore.

Disclosure: These product were sent to BlushPretty as a press sample for editorial consideration.

stephanie-isms: summer flings …

Whoops – it’s August 1, 2014. Where has summer gone? Better yet … where has my blogging gone? Ha!

I have been enjoying way too much of the summer and even more so … I’ve been having enjoying a steady rotation of good products to keep me looking breezy, beachy and pretty. Since we have hit the halfway mark … I thought it would be good to share my current summer loves …

Secret Refresh Body Spray in Citrus Breeze: a glistening, body complete with a bit of a afterglow from active movement (beach v-ball anyone?) is fabulous … but complete with stick to match … er … not so much. This citrusy scented body spray from Secret’s new Destinations collection is the perfect quick fix when you go from the beach to patio party. It delivers 48-hours of door protection … the perfect escape.

Philips Satin Soft Epilator: as a longtime fan of epilators, I’m in love with my new SatinSoft epilator which can be used wet or dry. Quick and easy to use, it leaves my legs smooth for at least 7 days before I feel even the slight peek of stubble. Compact and tiny, it’s also my ideal mate for travel. Bonus: comes with a dry brush to exfoliate the legs before removal!

Foreo Mini Luna: days spent out in the sun and hanging out can take a beating on my complexion regardless of SPF and the widest brim hat, so I’ve been treating my skin to this Ah-Mah-Zing deep-cleansing facial brush. My skin looks brighter and smoother with just a minute each morning and night. Two speeds for the most optimal cleanse. The best part: I’ve charged it once since I received it in June 2014 and it hasn’t lost any power since. Available at Murale!

Cargo Essential Lip Gloss in Rio: when the weather’s warm, I try to wear as little possible on the face, so a great lip gloss is the perfect “quick” makeup look. This Cargo treat is high shine and long wear which is exactly what you are looking for in summertime lips. Rio is also a great summer colour, a hint of orange which is a great switch up from pink.

Revlon ColorStay Moisture Stain in Shanghai Sizzle: again with the lips! If the agenda for the day is more meetings (on the patio) over wings and beer (on the patio), then I’ll opt for this pigmented and creamy colour. Red always makes a statement.

Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow in Kitten: against my summer tan, I’m enjoying using this metallic sheen over the eyes all by itself.  The right amount of sparkle, I’d pair this with a hint of a black line.  Kitten is the perfect peachy pink nude for the eye.

Anastasia Pro Pencil + DipBrow Pomade: this is a one-two punch for the brows. I’m not one to do completely different brows, but instead prefer to give them a natural fill but still polished. With these two products I can achieve that look easily. The Pro Pencil is great for priming the eyes before shadow too. Bonus: Anastasia is coming back to Murale! It’s also available at Sephora!

Almay Smart  Shade CC Luminous Primer: when the temperature is right, I can make do without foundation or powder, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want my skin to look even. I’ve been using the primer before I head out the door. My skin looks brighter and healthier instantly. Plus it has SPF! (Yay!)

The Body Shop Vitamin E Aqua Boost Sorbet: you know that refreshing feeling of applying a cool, rich face cream after a day out and how it makes the skin feel relaxed and pampered. Well, this cream is it except it’s lightweight and mattifying so you can wear it before bed AND in the morning throughout the whooooole day. Um. Yes please!

NARS Nail Polish in Zakynthos+Shameless Red: a good mani-pedi during sandals+tank top season is essential. NARS has a new set of polishes available this August, that will not only look great now … but transition well into Fall 2014.   Zakynthos is my go-to neutral and Shameless Red is my “accent”.  All the new colours to come are fabulous, but what sets NARS new polishes apart from the rest : THE BRUSH! I love the rounded flat brush – its made painting nails mistake proof!

Urban Decay’s Lipstick in Mrs. Mia Wallace: again with the lips! But for a good reason. A statement red lip is always in season, hot or cold. In honour of the classic cult favourite movie, PULP FICTION, Urban Decay released the perfect creamy red bringing to life Mrs. Mia Wallace. How can a red lip not look awesome with the perfect white tank and and denim short combo?
