stuff from lil steph : negative space nails tutorial

September 25, 2014By DJMC

Inspired by Tracylee by Sally Hansen for the Nonoo Spring 2015 Runway at NYFW, I’ve decked out my nails with negative space. In this case, the “negative space” is my natural nails. It’s super simple, so even if you’re a nail art novice, you can definitely do this one! All you need is some tape and any polish shade of your choosing (I used Born Pretty Store Nail Art Striping Tape and the Rimmel Seconds Polish in Hot White Love)

1. Apply a thin strip of tape in the centre of your nail

2. Paint over the tape and onto your nail with a colour of choice.

3. Peel off the tape to reveal your “negative space”.

And there you have it – a super simple runway inspired nail look!

recos from regina : kiss nail dress

September 23, 2014By DJMC

For those looking for a quick and easy way to do a manicure, Kiss Products has come out with their new and improved 2 Looks Nail Dress. As a fan of Kiss Nail Products, I was excited for the opportunity to try it out in Double Lutz.

The box contains a mini dual-sided nail file and 40 different sizes of peel off nail strips (to fit all sizes of finger nail beds). 20 nail strips are for the Full Manicure, and the other 20 nail strips are for the French Manicure – hence the 2 looks name of the product.

Some tips to keep in mind when you’re applying the products:

  • Keep strips in plastic sleeve until ready to use
  • Select strip that fits nails
  • Apply near, not on cuticle and smooth away from centre
  • Fold down over edge and gently file excess from side-to-side with nail file underneath edge of nail

If you’re going for the french tip manicure look, Kiss also suggest using a top coat to seal the tip of the nail dress.

What I liked about Nail Dress was how natural my nails looked with the strips on – I was given many compliments at work on how nice my nails looked. The step-by-step instructions on the back of the box with pictures on how to apply the product are also really helpful, and getting 2 looks in 1 product was also a plus. Application is easy, and the removal is even easier and quick just by gently peeling of the strip from the side.

You can find this product and other styles at Wal-Mart, Target and London Drugs starting at $8.97.

Disclosure: This product was sent to BlushPretty as a press sample for editorial consideration.

scene+heard : getting a truly radiant summer look

June 10, 2014By DJMC

As mentioned last week, I met with the Beauty Director of Us Weekly, Gwen Flamberg for a quick lunchtime chat to discuss tips, trends and secrets to achieving a great summer look.

Gwen was in town for the launch of Arm & Hammer’s newest toothpaste and Spinbrush collection, Truly Radiant. We were able to discuss some of her favourite beauty products for the summer, what makes her feel “truly radiant” and of course, the importance of a white smile when it comes down to creating a signature look that pops.

How you feel about yourself is really at the core of Gwen’s definition of beautiful. With every question I asked, it always came down to finding the products and practices that will make you feel beautiful – whether it’s swiping on a bright lipstick shade, using hair products that elevate your natural hair style or getting in a workout that you genuinely enjoy doing.

A white smile can be a simple way to contribute to creating that feeling of natural beauty no matter what you’re doing. Using a toothbrush and toothpaste that are designed to gently whiten, deep clean and protect not only boosts your look, but your health too. Gwen highlighted the convenience of the Spinbrush, as it’s easy to travel with and still delivers results because of its dual action head designed to remove 100% more surface stains than ordinary toothpaste. Pretty impressive, if you ask me! I also learned that strawberries are a natural stain lifter when you’re out and about sipping on coffee or red wine – the seeds work to lift stains before your teeth absorb them, so snack away on strawberries to keep your pearly whites gleaming!

Chatting with Gwen about her career was the best part, and in particular hearing the passion for what she does come through was great to hear. She shared that “Beauty is the most exciting thing to write about because the trends are constantly changing and it’s really easy with beauty to try a trend. You can get a piece of a celebrity lifestyle through a lipstick that a celebrity wore on the red carpet a lot easier than buying the gown.” I couldn’t agree more with her on that front!

As for the Truly Radiant collection, I was gifted with a Spinbrush and toothpaste to put to the test. I’ll be starting that soon (I just had oral surgery myself so I’m not quite ready to jump in to testing an electric toothbrush) and reporting back to see just how radiant I can get my smile to keep rocking pink and purple lips for the summer!

things we love : Gwen Flamberg

June 4, 2014By DJMC

Gwen Flamberg is technically a person, not a thing, however I wanted to share her as someone we love this week.

Yesterday, I had a chance to sit down with Us Weekly Beauty Director Gwen Flamberg and chat beauty trends, secrets and tips and why one of the keys to summer beauty is a bright, white smile. Arm & Hammer brought her to Toronto this week in honour of the launch if their newest line Truly Radiant, a line of toothbrushes and toothpaste to help achieve that bright summer look we’re all aiming for.

Gwen was a pleasure to chat with, and if you aren’t following her on Twitter @Gwen_UsBeauty, go check her out!

I was gifted a Spinbrush and toothpaste to test drive, so keep your eyes peeled for a full review and post sharing Gwen’s summer tips and advice.

musings from morgan : scandaleyes retro glam mascara

June 3, 2014By DJMC

There are few products I consistently splurge on when it comes to makeup. Mascara is one of them.

If someday I’m stranded on an island with only one piece of makeup to wear, mascara will be it – I sincerely believe that it’s an essential product for every woman out there. Enhancing ones lashes just elevates natural beauty in the best way, because it’s subtle, light, and always has a positive effect. No one looks bad with amped up lashes.

As a big fan of Rimmel London, I was excited to try their Scandaleyes Retro Glam Mascara to see if it would compare to my usual high-end mascara. Rimmel offers super affordable options, and I don’t think I’ve ever tried something that didn’t impress me. In particular, I love their foundations (they’ve got lots of variety for various skin types, combination/oily included) and I usually have a few of their lip products on hand as well.

Having worn the mascara out a few times, I can happily report that I wasn’t let down – this is a great product at a great price point that delivers a bold lash look.

The brush is an hour-glass shape, which you can really feel going to work when applying the mascara. It helps to fan out your lashes and emphasize the outer sides of your eyes, giving that retro wide-eyed effect. I don’t think I’d go so far as to say they give a false lash look, but I would definitely agree they give natural lashes a thicker, more voluminous look.

As for the quality, I would say you get what you pay for – don’t expect super long wear, but do expect it to stay on for say, the duration of a work day. I started to experience some flaking toward the end of the day but overall, it did a good job of staying in place (perhaps because the one I tried was waterproof). It wasn’t too difficult to remove either.

Overall, I’d definitely recommend this mascara if you’re looking for an affordable product that will give volume and create a bolder look. At around $6.00 a tube you really can’t go wrong! Personally, I’m going to keep it on hand for using with falsies and leave my high-end mascara for my day to day wear.

My love for Rimmel continues!
