recos from regina : revlon nail enamel

When I was growing up, the first nail polish brand I ever encountered was Revlon Nail Enamel. It was a staple in my mom’s makeup vanity when I was a child, and Revlon Red was one of the first nail polish colours I bought with my allowance as a preteen. As a teenager, my “go-to’s” were Toast of New York and Blackberry.

It’s a polish that promises to provide “gorgeous smooth, chip-resistant colour to nails” and last up to 10 days when used with the Revlon Base and Top coat. It also boasts an “exclusive silk-protein shield [that] works to instantly help even out the surface of the nail while rising above colour to automatically smooth away bubbles, streaks and brush marks.” Big claims – so I put them to the test with a new shade.

When trying out 440 Siren, a bold summery orange shade, I loved how quickly it dried between each of the two coats I had applied, and that there were no brush streaks. It also lasted almost 10 days. I received many compliments on how nice the colour looked, and it lasted through housework and visual re-merchandising at my day job. My nails were smooth and didn’t chip within those days.

The colour is perfect for the spring and summer, and can even be worn throughout the year when you want that pop of colour on your nails and toes. Revlon’s classic polish is available in 64 shades, and retails around $5.00 so it’s a great bargain for a great quality product!

Have you used Revlon’s classic polish? What’s your preferred shade?

musings from morgan : olay bright on schedule

I have been plagued by dark under eyes for as long as I can remember. I distinctly remember noticing them as early as age 11 – is that weird? Perhaps, but I can’t think of a time I haven’t been looking for ways to conceal them, brighten them and make them go away.

I haven’t really explored the world of under-eye creams, mostly because I’ve always had a hard time believing they could really work. That, and I’m not the best at maintaining a solid skincare routine for general maintenance, let alone adding in extra steps for smaller problem areas (side note: Naomi from In the Buff is keeping me on track, ever since my facial with her!).

So, when the Olay Fresh Effects {Bright On Schedule!} Eye Awakening Cream came across my desk I was very intrigued. For starters, the packaging was perfect for someone like me. No fuss, super cute and easy to throw in with my daily go-to beauty products. I could easily see myself quickly swiping on a few dabs of cream before diving into my makeup for the day.

The product is designed to cool and brighten the skin underneath your eyes to help with dark circles or puffiness (both are issues at their worst for me first thing in the morning). It’s oil-free and is infused with honeysuckle, white tea, and cucumber extracts to help it work its magic.

I’ve been using this product now (almost) daily for over a month and I must say – colour me impressed! I genuinely notice a difference in the colour under my eyes when I use this cream. The tri-roller ball feels awesome when applying as its super cooling and helps to really open my eyes and the cream absorbs quickly so I’m not lingering waiting to get started on my makeup.

If you’re looking to build it into a daily regime you already have in place, be sure to put this on after you cleanse and moisturize the rest of your face. The product retails for $10.97 at Walmart, which is a steal if you ask me given the results this little tube of magic produces. Definitely check it out if you want to look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed in the morning!

musings from morgan : degree motionsense

I am a busy lady, and I’m sure you are too. So, I bet you can appreciate a good long-lasting product when you come across one, especially in the personal hygiene department. We spend a lot of time, energy and money focusing on looking put together, but sometimes we forget to look for products that will help us feel and, well – smell better! Sure, we may have a signature perfume, but if there’s a step I’d like to think most of us always include in our morning routines, it’s antiperspirant to make sure we tackle more than just B.O.! It’s all a part of getting made up in the mornings from our heads down to our toes.

Unpleasant as it is, everybody sweats. Our underarms mean well when they’re working overtime, and it’s all in the name of keeping our bodies nice & cool. Degree has a really great page on their website with the scoop on sweat – it’s an informative read if you’re ever asking yourself why on earth something so unpleasant is so common.

Degree was also kind enough to share their latest product to manage your underarms, MotionSense, which claims to respond directly to your body movement and – get this – last 48 hours.

I swapped out my usual antiperspirant for MotionSense in Berry Cool over the last week, and while I didn’t dare test the 48 hour claim (sorry guys – I just can’t skip a shower!) I did vow to apply once in the morning and only touch-up if things got really bad. Perhaps that’s normal for you, but since I usually head to the gym in the evenings I typically apply another round of coverage pre-workout.

While I can’t say I noticed bursts of fresh scents throughout the day, I will say I was thoroughly impressed by the product’s performance. A typical weekday lands me home for the night around 9 p.m., and I still felt and smelled (or so I think) as fresh as I did when I left in the mornings for work. No need to reapply, even before the gym.

For a drugstore brand antiperspirant, it exceeded my expectations and provided a long-lasting result. If you decide to check it out and put the 48-hour claim to the test, let me know…I’m awfully curious.

recos from regina : NYC smooch proof lip stain

Recently, we were given the chance to try out the NYC Smooch Proof 16HR Lip Stain, a product that claims to provide a sheer yet intense colour that lasts. With a day off and a few errands to run, I tried it out in Unstoppable Red to see if it stood the test of time.

When I first applied the lip stain at 8:00 am, I was impressed by how nice the colour was and how quickly it dried. Since this was my first time trying out a lip stain of any brand I didn’t know what to expect, but I did find myself applying lip balm as I felt my lips started to dry out during the day.

When I had my first meal (coffee and a muffin), I noticed & liked that the colour didn’t rub off on my mug. A few hours later, I met up with my husband for lunch at a buffet restaurant, and after 2 hours of eating, some of the lip stain started to come off but there was still visible product.

Afternoon snacks, dinner, dessert and more beverages came along and surprisingly, some of the product still remained! Not too bad for a product that retails around $5 at the drugstore.

By the end of the day, the stain lasted about 12 hours. I was impressed by it’s staying power, despite the fact it didn’t quite give me the full 16 hours of complete coverage.  The only advice that I would give is to keep lip balm on hand as it may start to dry out your lips. However, if you’re looking for a stain on a budget that comes in a variety of colours, we definitely think you should check it out!

musings from morgan : olay fresh effects

I’m always on the hunt for products that make my skincare routine easier, whether that’s through saving me time or tackling more than one issue in one product.

Olay has an entire line of products aimed at doing just that, while encouraging us to “embrace a world without filters” and be our uncensored selves. You may have seen the funky packaging on the shelves by now too – it’s their Fresh Effects line which carries products from makeup remover wipes to moisturizers, and cleansers to sunscreen.

I was given the opportunity to try out two products: the Out of this Swirled Deep Pore Clean + Exfoliating Scrub and the S’Wipe Out Refreshing Makeup Removal Cloths (cutest names ever).  I used the wipes a few times to test their performance on removing a full face of makeup, and I used the scrub over the course of a week to see how it performed on my combo skin.

First up were the wipes, which right off the bat I liked for their convenience. The pre-moistened wipes are something you can throw in an overnight or gym bag, and mine are already housed in the latter. They smell great, were gentle on my skin and did a decent job of removing my makeup. They didn’t remove every trace (my mascara, for example needed something a little more heavy duty) but if you’ve just got a little bit of makeup on they’re good for quick removal.

The exfoliating scrub I had was the Honeysuckle and White Tea scent (which smelled delightful). The product has two components – a moisture-rich cleanser ribbon paired with an exfoliating microbead ribbon to cleanse the skin and minimize pores. The product has an easy-to-use pump which puts about a quarter-sized amount of product in your hand.

This cleanser is definitely on the gentle side, and I think is a good day-to-day product if you have few skin problems. I, on the other hand, lean towards cleansers that will manage the oil in my skin and set me up to stay matte all day, so I’d recommend this if you’re looking for a basic daily cleanser that both gently exfoliates and moisturizes.

I think the entire Fresh Effects line has a ton of great products to check out, and I’m definitely curious to try the Shine Minimizing Cleanser after trying out these.

Have you tried anything from the Olay Fresh Effects line? What do you like from the selection of products?
