Steal this look for Spring : Golds and Fiery Plums!

I had to share this look that I did recently for a photoshoot. I think it’s a great take on a fusion soft smokey eye and by pairing it with sheer foundation warmed up with a bit of bronzer it takes you right into the warmer weather easily.

renee 2

  • First prep and prime the eye as needed. I used Urban Decay’s Eye Primer Potion in Sin. Applying this with a synthetic brush gives a well blended application and spreads the product well.
  • Using the Lorac Gold UnZipped Palette, dust a mix of Unlocked and Unlimited all over the lid from lashes into the crease. I then dusted MAC Cosmetics Amber Lights at the outer and inner corners of the lid to add some depth.
  • Next up, using NYX eyeshadow in Golden Peach, I worked the colour on the top part of the lid and lightly into the crease. This created a soft gradient and you’ll find that depending on the skintone, tones done the brightness of the gold.
  • With a crease brush, start working Unbridled from Lorac UnZipped at the outer corner and into the crease and blend away.  When blending, blend upwards to soften a bit of the plum up to the browbone.
  • I returned back to my NYX Golden Peach Shadow and did a soft trace abrove the crease blending in with the plum.
  • Highlight the browbone with your highlighter of choice, and then blend/buff the entire eye with a clean brush to fuse the colours.
  • Complete the eyes with layers of your favourite mascara, and a gel or liquid liner.
  • Brush the brows up and fill as needed create a soft full brow. I filled with just a brow pencil for a softer look.
  • Finish the look with a sheer base and conceal blemishes as needed. Apply bronzer, and finish with a light dusting of blush. I used NARS The Multiple Scultpting duo to contour, and NARS Luster for blush on the model because I am in love with both products!

31 days to a prettier 2017 : Make an appointment for your brows …

portfolio11

So, I totally understand that with the onset of a new year after a well “spent” holiday season … the last thing you want to do is spend some more; but if there is one thing I want you to spend a bit of money and time on in this entire 31 day period, it would be a good brow consultation.

Day 3 : January 3

Today, you’re going to do a bit of reasearch. You’re going to Google a few the best brow studios close to home or work, read reviews on them – both positive and negative, and make a decision about which brow studio you would trust with your eyebrows. The next thing you are going to do, is make an appointment for a consultation and/or service.

Why your brows?

Because they are transformative in every way. They create a frame for the eyes, and when your brows are right … the whole world is right and world peace is achieved. Just kidding.  Seriously though, ensuring that your brows are clean, well maintained, and in great shape allows for any beauty look you do to seem much more polished and complete. Meeting with a brow specialist can provide you with valuable insight into the best brow for your face.

Before I go any further, let’s get something straight – I’m not talking about trying to achieve Instagram filtered, ombré, gradiated,  did you use a sharpie for that (?), eyebrows. That ain’t real life. I’m simply pointing you in the direction of,  perhaps you need to define the arch a bit more; or grow them out a bit; or trim them a bit; or learn to use a pencil better to extend the tail. These are all things a brow specialist can walk you through.

So again, today, I want you to make yourself an appointment for as soon as possible. Trust me … you’ll love it!

Brows over bros, yo!

TIP : Resist the urge to groom, tweeze, and clean up your brows before you go in for your consultation. That’s like cleaning up before the cleaning lady arrives. Let your specialist see your brows in all their glory. You may be tweezing out an area that might look better a little fuller.

HOMEWORK : Though you should trust your specialist to design and perfect your brows for you, it’s still nice if you bring in pictures of brows you like or admire. Just to give her (or him) an idea of your style and taste. But don’t marry yourself to a specific brow because it might not work with what you naturally got. be open-minded to possibilities!

best of bridal beauty : a few of my favourite things …

Our Bridal Beauty Preview for Fall/Winter 2015-2016 was a smash success, and it had me thinking that I should really take a moment to share some of my favourite items for knocking out some bridal beauty.

Like any makeup artist worth her beauty blender, I have a huge kit, but a selection of products that are a must, must, must. I have products I love for creating a smokey eye, a classic twist, a vintage red lip. So keep reading … because I’m about to share.

The Red Lip …

Hands down, it’s NARS. Always NARS. My favourite product(s) is their Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in either Cruella, Red Square or Pop Life. The matte finish stays put but doesn’t look dry and for an all day event like a wedding you need something more matte than glossy.  If it’s not the pencils – it’s their new Audacious lipstick colours and you can take your pick : Rita, Marlene, Geraldine, Lana  – which range from true red to a more orange based (which I think is hot for a bride!)

The Rosy Lip …

Rose, Plum, and anything softly pink are the other bridal favourite.  To be honest, I smushed everything down into a palette, and didn’t write the names anywhere, but I do have my favourites in a tube. They include : Plumful, Syrup, and Twig by MAC; Casablanca by Tom Ford; and pretty much anything by Bobbi Brown! And while we are here, let’s talk about nude lips, again, I’m going to throw to NARS for Belle Du Jour and Bobbi Brown for a colour I have called Uber Pink (which isn’t a bright pink at all).

The Eyeshadow …

Makeup artists have their shadows they swear by. For example, it doesn’t matter what other palette I have in my kit … I’m a slave for MAC Shroom. I will always have a pot or seven of it in my kit(s). But right now, I’m favouring Lorac Pro Palette for it’s neutral but shimmery shades however this is currently not available for Canada so you have to online shop it.  My Smashbox Double Exposure Palette is hitting the mark for more glam styles (and you can get this at Murale or Shoppers Drug Mart for those Optimum points!) and I’m am currently obsessed with TooFaced Chocolate and Semi-Sweet Chocolate Eyeshadow palettes.  Both the Smashbox and the TooFaced Palettes, I find, really stick to the eye … not a lot of shadow fallout so I really enjoy using them for shading a heavier look.

The Flawless Skin …

Again, I’m very much attached to my MAC Face and Body, because it allows me to adjust and layer as needed without getting to cake face. But for concealers, I’m devoted to my Amazing Cosmetics Concealer in various shades from Ivory to Light Honey, MAC Select Cover-up in those super portable triangle containers, and also, Stila Perfecting Concealer.

If I happen to have a client with acne issues, I’ve been reaching a lot for me Estee Lauder Clear Difference BB Creme, which for me, lays down a nice layer of coverage without looking dry, cakey or messy. For mature skin, I find their EE Creme to be effective as well.

Also, you can get great skin without primers. For the eyes, it’s always Urban Decay eye primers, and for the skin, I’ve been using Makeup Forevers new Step 1 Primers.

The Blush, The Highlight and The Contour …

Well, this list could go on forever, huh? Ha ha. I would have to say my friends right now are Cliniques new Highlighter and Contour Chubby Pencils. Just for the ease of use alone.  But I am also loving my new Stila Shape and Shade Custom Contour Duo and NARS The Matte Multiples in Altai.  As these are creams, after I set the cream product, I’ll go back in with a powder set for intensity, so I’m often reaching for Makeup Forever’s new Pro Sculpting Duos (which are insane – j’adore!), and my Aerin (Estee Lauder) Kaleidoscope Palette especially when the bride doesn’t want too much shimmer/shine.

For blush, well, hmmmm. I always layer cream under powder and my favourites are from rms beauty in Modest, Smile and Demure.  I also favour Makeup Forever’s HD Cream Blushes and NARS The Multiple in Puerto Vallarta or Altai.

For powder blushes, it’s always a selection of pinks and peaches from MAC that I lightly dust on.

The Lashes and Brows …

I currently carry all three shades of Cargo’s Brow Kit in my bag and use both the powder and the wax for perfecting brows. But I also lean on MAC Brown Pencils as well and I love these for their easy application and also the spooly on the other end.

To define the lashes, it’s always Maybelline Great Lash in various formulas ranging from brown to dark brown to black. I rarely use pencil liners, but when I do, I’m using Cargo’s Swimmables or Urban Decay’s 24/7 pencils.

The Hair …

Let’s start with caring for the hair … which I normally don’t carry in my kit, but suggest to my brides. Especially after the long cold winter we are JUST getting rid of, brides need to start nourishing their hair back into shape.  I’m currently recommending the Nexxus Therappe and Humectress line of shampoo and conditioner for longer length hair that needs to be brought back to life from a dry season. I would also recommend OGX Vitamin E Shampoo and Conditioner for hair health. I suggest brides also pick up OGX’s Penetrating Oil and work it into the ends of the hair  – especially if they plan to leave the hair long and loose for the big day.

The Updo …

Well, I am sure bobby pins are a no brainer – right? I’m picking them up by the box at Sally Beauty in shades of black, brown and silver.  SalonCare is the brand available, but there is also Marianna.

To reduce  oil or add texture to the hair, it’s always Not Your Mother’s Dry Shampoo.  For tousled perfection, I’m really liking Tresemme’s Perfectly (un)Done Hairspray. I also like their big cans of spray and will usually carry a couple of extra hold formulas, and also climate control. To tame frizzies, or induce a sheen, I’m going back to Not Your Mothers for their Smooth Moves hair creme.

For hair prep and finishing, I’m also relying on Sally Hershberger’s Signature Line (available at Shoppers Drug Mart) mainly using the Keratin Repair Spray and also, the Galm Waves Texture Spray.

So that’s it!

My kit in one really long blog post.   Would love to know what other artists are using in their kits, but would also love to answer questions any brides or beauty bunnies out there might have about any of the above products! You know where to reach me : beautymail@blushpretty.com!

Have a great hump day all!

what’s in my makeup bag : morgan

I love to experiment with makeup, but I often save things like glitter eyeshadow, coloured liner and false lashes for weekends and outings. My day-to-day makeup routine has taken many years to perfect (it used to consist of off-colour foundation and racoon eyeliner – it was high school and I was a moody teenager, after all), but I have it down to an efficient system now that pulls together a simple look fit for the office that lasts on even the longest of days.

The products themselves vary, but the staples are the same. I’m constantly experimenting with new products, which I’m sure isn’t recommended for keeping your skin healthy, but depending on my budget and what I’ve been reading on my favourite blogs, I tend to mix it up and try new things.

Let’s start with the base. In my rotation, I’ve always got a primer, concealer, liquid foundation, blush, bronzer, setting powder and/or pressed powder. The magic word for me when it comes to choosing anything face related is matte. I have got a very oily t-zone and I am such an easy sell if you tell me a product will make it stop!

Above, I have the following: Rimmel London Stay Matte Primer and Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation, Benefit Erase Paste Concealer (the HG of brightening concealers – perfect for under eyes), my trusty Lise Watier Portfolio Professional Correctors in Normal (my other concealer HG – everything you could ever need to perfect your face is here for redness, undereyes, contouring, etc.) Almay Smart Shade blush in Pink, and Kat Von D Lock It Powder Foundation (which I use to set). Not pictured above (but below) is my Essence Sun Club Matt Bronzing Powder. It might look like a lot, but these products create the clean slate for my eye makeup and give my cheeks a little bit of definition.

Once I’ve got that done, I move on to my eyes where I use the following:

Make Up For Ever Aqua Brow Corrector to fill and shape my brows, NYX Studio Liner liquid liner in Black for my signature cat eye, and Benefit They’re Real! Mascara to give my lashes the oomph they need to make my baby blues pop (a product I haven’t strayed from since its launch in 2011). I skip eyeshadow on a daily basis and usually opt for a bold, red lip instead.

Finally, if I’m expecting it to be warm or an especially long day, I finish off with a few spritzes of Urban Decay’s Deslick Setting Spray to keep oil at bay (I take all the help I can get).

If you can believe it, my whole routine takes about 15 minutes tops. I can wake up at 7:30 a.m. and be showered, changed, made up and out the door in half an hour if need be without skipping a single step of what’s shown above.

As far as carrying a makeup bag with me, I typically don’t – except for my bag of lipsticks of course. I might throw in some concealer if I’m hiding a blemish or my setting powder during the summer, but for the most part I opt for products that will last and give me great results.

And there you have it – what’s in my makeup bag! Do you use any of these products on a daily basis?
