foundation

made up with mer : foundations for dry skin …

I love foundation.  I think I might prefer foundation over mascara….gasp!…..no, I take it back.  Not true.  But close.

If you are like me and have “dry’ish” skin and are looking for a good foundation, allow me to introduce a few suggestions that provide a little more moisture and don’t cake or flake. I will start from the least amount of coverage to the most.

Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer  ($49.00 at Sephora)
This is great for the no makeup makeup look, the I just rolled out of bed this way but look miraculously more polished than one might think look and the Sunday look if you are me.  Hydrating light coverage, this is a great staple.  Let’s call this the casual foundation or the low commitment foundation.  Good stuff.

Nars Sheer Glow Foundation  ($57.00 at Sephora)
This is a step up in terms of coverage.  Don’t let the glow fool you though – it’s very subtle.  Think Natural, not matte but not dewy.  This foundation is smooth to apply and lasts the whole day.

Hourglass Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint ($64.00 at Sephora)
Bit of a mouthful this one.  Its predecessor was the Illusion tinted moisturizer.  This is a full coverage foundation.  Fairly thick to apply but has a luminescent quality to it.  Tip – If you like the formula but wish a lighter application mix in a little moisturizer.

As with any foundation, I recommend asking for a sample before purchasing.  Use the sample for a couple of days to ensure the colour and formula are a perfect fit.

Happy shopping!

stuff from lil steph : shu uemura POREraser

Warmer weather calls for longer lasting products, SPF, and all the things I still look for in base products – good coverage, oil control, and pore smoothing. The Shu Uemura POREraser UV Under Base Mousse ($46) claims to do it all – it’s a “base” primer that can be worn with or without foundation. In the Mika for Shu collection there are 4 different UV Under Bases (all with different and pretty pump packaging designs!):

  • POREraser UV under base mousse beige SPF 35 PA+++
  • POREraser UV underbase mousse pink SPF 35 PA+++
  • UV under base brightening mousse pink purple SPF 30 PA++
  • UV under base BB mousse BB Beige SPF 30 PA+++

“The shu uemura light as air UV under base mousse is a make-up essential, it veils skin to transform it into the perfect canvas for the sweetest or sultriest wonderland fantasies… Light as air mousse for medium skin tones that provides a pore-less semi-matte finish.”

As mentioned above, There are two colours – pink and beige. “Pink” is for light skin tones, while “Beige” is best suited to those with medium skin tones. I’m typically in the light-medium range, but I find that beige is a little light for me.

Pumping the bottle produces a lightweight mousse, that reminds me a little bit of a volumizing mousse for hair. The slight sunscreen scent is a little unpleasant but dissipates as you blend it onto the face. The product itself is light and soft. It smoothes over the skin in an almost water-like manner. The POREraser smooths over minor imperfections, reducing redness, mattifying, and filling in pores. Furthermore, the product extends the wear-time of my foundation by up to 2 hours.

Not only does the Shu Uemura POREraser have the same properties as old pore-minimizing primer, it also contains SPF to protect the skin from the sun! Overall, an A+ in my books and a must-have for the summer months.

stuff from (l’il) steph : COVERGIRL clean whipped creme foundation

As someone with sensitive skin, I can really appreciate CoverGirl’s latest foundation launch, the CoverGirl Clean Whipped Creme Foundation* ($10.99) comes in 10 shades. It’s non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic, and didn’t clog my pores for the few weeks I tested it out, not to mention the formula worked nicely with my oily/combo skin. I tried out two different colours – 320 Creamy Natural and 135 Buff Beige.

You’d expect a cream product to be a little thick, but that’s where the “whipped” nature of this product comes in. It’s ultra-lightweight and feels a like it’s been pumped with air when you apply it on the face.

Typically, foundation coverage and lightness are traded off. You can never have both. This product is the exception. To my surprise, one layer was medium coverage and the second was inching near full coverage, yet it still looked and felt natural. Impressive.

Another plus, the finish on the skin sits nicely between that “dewy-like-I-just-got-back-from-a-run “and the “cake-face-matte”. I’ve got oily skin, so lasting power was a so-so 3-4 hours but nothing a little powder over the t-zone can’t fix.

Unfortunately, neither creamy natural nor buff beige were a perfect colour match for me, both were way too pale. In the picture above I’m wearing 320 Creamy Natural. Let’s be honest here, I look a little ghostly (and Halloween has already passed).

Despite the absolute beauty no-no that is wearing the wrong foundation colour, I was pleasantly surprised (and intrigued) by the performance of the CoverGirl Clean Whipped Creme foundation that is pushing me to pick up a shade that that suits my skin tone a bit better.

stuff from (l’il) steph : maybelline instant age rewind – the perfect powder

The Maybelline Instant Age Rewind The Perfector Powder* claimsPressed powder and smoothing primer resurface and perfect skin, while adding a touch of radiance for a younger looking skin instantly.”

First thing’s first. This packaging was made with the in-the-purse, on-the-go type of girl in mind. The powder is on one side and there’s a mirror and sponge conveniently placed on the other. Also, I tried the “drop test” out to see how if the powder would break, and it didn’t!

When I tried this out on my arm, I saw shimmers and immediately got irked. I don’t quite understand why cosmetics companies think glitters and shimmers are equivalent to “radiance” in products. In general, seeing shimmer in a product bothers me.

Despite the shimmers, they aren’t actually visible on the face (sorry for the false alarm). I tried the colour Fair 10 which you’d think would be much too light for me. However, it turns out this powder is quite sheer, almost translucent. The powder has a mattifying effect that’s not too matte or cakey and makes my skin look super smooth.

Not that I need any “age rewinding” (I’m only 19) but this powder was a hit for me. It’s got great packaging features and the luminous matte finish that this powder offers is perfect for transitioning your makeup from summer to fall.
