31 days to a prettier 2017 : find your perfect concealer …

Have you ever caught your reflection midday and thought to yourself : “woah …”; and not like an enthusiastic woah that you hear in rap songs but more like a “what happened?” kind of woah. Midday or late day, you may find that your coverage has faded, or that some redness has appeared, or at the very least you are just in dire need of a touch-up. Let’s prevent that from happening.

Day 25 : January 25

Get yourself the perfect portable concealer.

I’m a huge advocate for having a concealer stick or pencil in my makeup kit – even if you only wear a base and rarely need any concealer (if that’s the case you’re super lucky!). Concealer sticks/pencils are small, transportable,  and easy to use; and if you find the right one – they are super creamy and blendable. All of these factors combined makes it the best tool for makeup that always looks fresh and natural. All it takes is a quick look in the mirror during your lunch break, your concealer, and your fingertips.

As mentioned, you’ll want one that is creamy; this will allow you to blend over your skin without the aid of more moisturizer and if your skin tends to get drier as the day wears on. Concealer sticks are better for this, but some pencils can be creamy in consistency – it’s just a matter of testing products out. Creamier concealers are good for touching up under the eyes and around the nose. Concealer pencils – which tend to by firmer – are exceptional at covering up hard to hide zits or marks on the face. If you find your skin blemishes need more help than bags under the eyes, they might work better for you.

When it comes to application, it doesn’t get any easier – its basically apply directly from tube to face and use your fingers to warm the product and blend it in. No brushes, no sponges.

Bye bye bad face days!

TIP : Get colour matched. It’s super easy and any makeup artist at any beauty department can point you in the right direction.

HOMEWORK : Know what brands work for you before you shop. If there are certain brands that you know work best for you as base products, try to shop within those brands for consistency and ultimate happiness with your chosen concealer!

31 days to a prettier 2017 : wear your hair differently …

Yesterday, we made sure that you have a plan to get in to see your stylist for a cut or trim. Until then, you’ll need to create a diversion until you can come through with a fresh new style.

Day 11 : January 11

Style your hair differently.

Take a moment to practice and trysome new styles for your hair this evening. If you’re growing out your bangs, experiment with different braids and twists to keep them up and off your face. If you always wear your hair in a ponytail, try a half-up / half-down with some waves. Change your curly hair to something super sleek with a flatiron. I’m sure by now, you now where I’m going with this.

Visit your Pinterest account and aim to try 2 or 3 styles that you like. Practice tonight, and then wear your hair in your chosen styles throughout the next few days at work or when out with friends. You’ll be surprised at how a simple change like adding a wave to your long length or moving from a centre to a side part can modernize your look in an instant. People notice!

Happy hairstyling …

TIP : Don’t worry about washing your hair before trying new styles. Sometimes, second day hair is better for volume, curling and manageability.

HOMEWORK : Challenge yourself to not revert back to your usual style (high bun, ponytail, jaw clip) – at least not for one day. Switch it up on the daily!

31 days to a prettier 2017 : have better hair days …

We’ve focused so much on makeup in the past week, that we need to take a moment, step back and focus on the one thing that can ensure a great day, almost every day : your hair.

Day 10 : January 10

Get your haircut.

Or at least make an appointment to do so. Soon. Maybe you are due for a whole new ‘do or perhaps you just need a trim and clean-up – whatever it is, get it done.

A fresh new style, especially one that flatters your face, can bring forth a whole new confidence in your beauty game. It can also keep you out of a rut and keep your look current. Change is good. You can start off small with either adding in some layers or fringe or you can try a whole new cut all together like going short; a bob or pixie – take your pick.

If you’re not ready to make a big leap, then at least get in to see your stylist for a trim. Cut off the split ends and thinning length, trim your bangs, and freshen up your layers. Maintenance like this will ensure less bad hair days and less frustration with styling your hair overall.

And let’s not forget the other fun stuff … if it works with your time and budget you can consider fun stuff like a new colour, highlights, lowlights, babylights …etc.

See your stylist … stat.

TIP : Dont’ ever go into your stylist and say … just do whatever. Images are always a good bet, even if you’re thinking of just some minor changes to your hair. IMages can hel to clearly communicate what you’re trying to achieve and better guide your stylist.

HOMEWORK : Make it a habit to see your stylist for regular trims and maintenance. Mark in your calendar when you’re about due and try not to stray to far from that date when booking in an appointment.

scene+heard : Strivectin HAIR

Earlier this month we sent BlushPretty Lead Hair Artist, Samantha Wilson, over to the Colette Grand Cafe at The Thompson Hotel to check up on the latest from Strivectin. Samantha has nothing but rave reviews for this new line, but before we share with you her thoughts, a little bit of background for you …

Strivectin3

In case you haven’t heard, Strivectin has expanded their innovation and research in anti-aging from skincare to … HAIR CARE! As a leading brand in everything against aging – fine lines, wrinkles, firmness, dehydration, dullness , you name it! – it only makes sense that Strivectin beefs up their brand by tackling women’s other beauty obsession : hair and great hair days 24/7.

This new franchise, StriVectin Hair introduces a breakthrough in research to tackle the signs of aging in hair : thinning, wiriness, dryness, gray, dullness, breakage, split ends, frizz, lackluster texture, and brittleness. According to the brand, “each formula contains the brand’s NIA-114 technology which activates the scalp and rejuvenates hair from root to tip”.

The product range has three separate formulas which includes: Ultimate Restore, Max Volume, and Color Care.

Strivectin1Here’s what Samantha had to say after three weeks testing out the new line :

The first thing that caught my eye, besides the pretty packaging, was the ingredients in these products. I love that the products are free of sulphates, parabens, synthetic dyes, phthalates and phosphates.

The line not only targets what you feel is wrong with your hair but also, what you want from your hair. It promotes trying to restore your hair to its natural, most healthy, ageless state.

I really liked that this line focuses on the scalp and the hair from root to tip. After the first use of StriVectin, I could feel and see a difference in the state of my hair. My hair felt and looked fuller. It felt soft, nourished and hydrated; and as an added bonus my hair had a beautiful healthy shine that didn’t weigh my hair down. The fragrance is soft and not overpowering – very pleasant!

Overall, it’s an affordable must have line for hair health. I would recommend this line to clients and friends.

There you have it – straight from BlushPretty’s Master of Hair and a BP Bride favourite artist.  If you are curious about the line and want to hear more or test it out yourself, you can visit your local Shoppers Drug Mart to pick up the line.

Have a great Monday beauties!

Remember that year when it was all “short hair, don’t care”? A year of pixies, undercuts and fringe were all the rage, and rightly so because the look was hot. And while pixies and undercuts are still great cuts, some people have opted to start growing out their hair into bobs, and their slightly longer cousin – the lob.

But with any grow-out, come wedding season, we are often told “I’ve been growing out my hair, and it’s just a bit longer than a bob …and I really don’t know what I can do with it. Maybe we should just blow it out and I’ll wear it straight”.

Wearing your hair as is can be an option – nothing will translate as more you than a slightly more polished version of how you regularly wear your hair. You’l look great! However, if you are looking for another option, I think that the textured and wavy lob adds a bit of flare to your “not long enough yet” strands!

I think the poster child for the ultimate wavy lob or bob is the always stylish (and charming) Emma Stone. She’s known to wear her short hair many ways from middle part to deep side part, straight to curly, bangs to no bangs. She knows her options! But I find her go to look is always a bit of piecey twistedness.

I have plenty of clients scheduled in this year with lobs. Some are brides, some are maids of honour, some are the chicest of mothers! Plenty are shooing away the standard blowout and flip for a sexier bedhead style.

To create this look for my clients I prefer to use a 1 inch curling iron and very few products. The list looks something like this:

– Hot Tools 1-inch barrel curling iron
– Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak
– Sall Hershberger Supreme Lift Root Spray
– Sally Hershberger Glam Waves Texture Spray
– Elnett Hair Spray
– Bumble+Bumble Styling Creme
– Bumble+Bumble Texture (un)Dressing Creme

For prep, I always start with a bit of dry shampoo brushed through the hair. My pick is Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak, and I find it adds a bit of lift and texture, especially for finer hair types. It soaks up the right amount of excess oil, but doesn’t leave a film or dusty layer of product.

As I section through the bottom layers of hair, I’ll spray Sally Hershberger’s Supreme Lift Root Spray before wrapping small sections  around the barrel  of my iron. I never use the clamp and wrap the sections with the barrel pointed downward. I also leave the ends free a bit for a more undone look.  I’ll repeat this sectioning and wrapping from the nape of the neck to the crown, alternating the direction I wrap the the hair with each section.

For the layers from the crown and up, I do repeat the process, but instead use Sally Hershberger’s Glam Waves instead of root spray. This is just personal preference as I find it gives a shiny but not weighted appearance to the top layers.

Once I’m done wrapping the hair and styling the front according to the client’s wishes (some want fringe, some don’t; some want it up off the face, others flat!), I’ll either finesse and finish with some Bumble and Bumble Styling Creme or Texture (un)Dressing Creme.  While both are made to be applied to the hair while damp, I actually will rub a bit through my fingers or palms and then either smooth the hair (Styling Creme) for a bit of shine or break up the waves and “fluff” a bit more (Texture Creme) for a more undone appearance.

Everything gets finished with some Elnett. Every-THANG!

So that’s how we do the ‘do! If you want to see it up close and personal – have you RSVP’d for our Bridal Beauty Preview this Sunday, January 31, 2016 yet?  If not, there is still time with a couple of spots left! Save your spot by heading over to our Eventbrite page!

Have a great week!
