countdown to christmas : the body shop gift sets … for men!

You know who the hardest person to shop for is … men. Actually, perhaps not the men in your life like your dad, your husband, your brother … but men who are teachers. Specifically men who are teachers who also happen to be your child’s teacher and you need to purchase a gift for them … stat! Other men, who may fall in this category may include : their (as in your children) bus driver, their martial arts teacher, their basketball coach. No kids but still have men in your life? Well, what about your condo concierge whom always ensures your multiple online shopping packages are accepted and kept safe until you pick them up?  Your “Uncle Bob” – dad’s bestie from way back who is always shows up on the holidays? Or what about that guy that you picked out for Secret Santa at the office? These are all examples of men in your life that deserve to be gifted during the holiday season, yet you might not know their favourite colour or their proper shirt size. Womp Womp.

So – men – officially as hard to shop for as women … until The Body Shop, that is.  Plenty of their gift sets for their rich lotions and creams are just as suitable for men, if not tailor-made for them.  I find there are several options in their hand creams that have pleasant, masculine-friendly scents, and also, masculine-friendly packaging (because sometimes – that does matter!)

This season, my picks would definitely be The Hemp Moisture High Gift Set (shown above). It’s inexpensive at just $15 plus HST, but is luxe in feel and appearance. It would be my choice for a Secret Santa gift or a teacher’s gift.

The Almond Hand and Nail Expert Gift (shown above) is my second choice, and I would gift this more to the male friend who appreciates a neat and well groomed appearance, a great-smelling lotion, and tidy nails. A male co-worker even, perhaps? Just $35 plus HST.

My bonus choice, hands down, is The Modern Man’s Grooming Kit which is just $15 plus HST, but filled with all the grooming tools a man would want, need and use … but never admit to loving (because you know men!). Large Metal Clippers, a nail grooming tool, nail scissors and a comb. All the things a gentleman should own to look proper and neat daily. This gift would not only be great for teachers – but I would also pick it up as a stocking stuffer for my dad and brothers – now doubt about it!

As you most likely know, The Body Shop is a Canadian staple and can be found at most major Malls across the country!

We’ve got 8 days left folks – how is the shopping going?

mereadesso : discovering their tinted all-in-one moisturizer (and telling you how you can get it on sale!)

Did you get a load of that weekend weather we just had? Alright, maybe Saturday started off a bit wonky … but yesterday? The boardwalk stroll, only need a sweater, “gosh, I think I need to cool down with an Iced Cappuccino” super awesome weather?  Yesterday was the turning point – I’m thinking we really can put away our heavy coats and winter boots away now … *fingers crossed*

(pssst : stay tuned to the end of this post, I’m going to talk about every gal’s favourite thing : a sale!)

And just as we start to clean out our wardrobes to freshen up for spring, it would be safe to say that we can also refresh our makeup bag. The spring beauty lines are coming for us, full throttle, and now is a great time to rethink your routine for spring. Aside from picking up a brighter cheek colour or perhaps a glossier lip colour … have you considered lightening up your base?  When the weather takes a turn for the better, I tend to lighten the load switching to lighter, milkier versions of a base product.

One of my favourite ways to create a lighter, softer complexion for spring and summer is to use a tinted moisturizer. In the past few weeks, I’ve been playing with Mèreadesso’s Tinted All-in-One Moisturizer, which comes in four shades : light, medium, dark and deep dark. A step-up from their regular All-in-One Moisturizer, the tinted version boasts all the same tricks : 16 botanical extracts, 8 minerals and enzymes, and over 20 antioxidants. While lightweight, this tinted moisturizer is effective acting as a serum, primer, day cream and more, all while evening out the skintone. The best part of it all : while it is meant to provide the light coverage you expect from a tinted moisturizer – you can dab on a bit more here or there to reveal a more rich coverage when and where you need it. *hi five*

To apply this product, I used my favourite tool : my fingertips. With my fingertips, I could apply and blend all over, and then dab around my “red zones” – around the nose, under the eyes, the corners of my eyes. I found this method worked for me. I controlled the coverage. I did apply a few times with a regular foundation brush, and spot concealed with a concealer brush but I feel I get a better application with my hands.  The same goes for sponges – I prefer to see the product on my face and not the sponge and felt that the sponge soaked up too much! For use, I found one pump was enough to blend through and out from the centre of the face. Another pump to spot conceal and blend into the hairline.

I was provided a bottle in Medium by the lovely ladies at 1Milk2Sugars, which suit my typical asian skintone (light, warm, and yellow undertone) just find and disappears without a trace. I have only tested the medium, but given that the tone matched easily, and that tinted moisturizers tend to be more forgiving when being used by various levels in one “shade”, I have hopes that Fair will suit most pale and light and pinkier skintones; medium for some light, most neutral, and many light-to-medium golden skintones; dark for golden and tan skintones; and deep dark for the deepest skintones.

For coverage, I found it just right for me. It never felt thick or like it was sitting on top of my skin – which I like a lot.  It brightened my skin and gave a more glowing appearance. Keep in mind, that I tend to have normal skin, with a bit of oiliness through the t-zone, yet not oily enough that I am constantly addressing it. I have minimal acne but do have redness around the nose and sometimes the cheeks. I have minimal scarring and discolouration … but my skin could use a pick-me-up most days of the week. I do NOT wake up flawless.

What I love the most : as a makeup artist, I love that this product provides base coverage BUT also acts as a primer for the rest of my makeup. After evening out my skintone for me, Mèreadesso’s Tinted Moisturizer provided a soft, smooth canvas for the rest of my makeup to be applied. I would use a bit of cream blush and cream shadow for the eyes and it would last all day. I did not set with powder, yet felt that my makeup stayed put and didn’t fade!

Do I have you thinking about tinted moisturizers for the springtime? Awesome-sauce. Well, I’m here to make your Monday a little bit better too, because I am happy to report that Mèreadesso is offering a 20% discount from April 13, 2015 to midnight, April 20, 2015! musings from morgan : mary kay CC cream

I shared my first BB cream experience a few months back right here. I tried my first BB cream this blog, and today I bring you my first CC cream experience!

With summer on its way and life being busy as ever, I welcomed the opportunity to try a product that was lighter, had SPF coverage (SPF 15) and evened out my skin tone. Summer calls for simpler beauty routines and even more diligence on the skincare front, and Mary Kay’s CC Cream fit the bill for a product that could tackle both of those things.

The cream comes in a tube with a pump attached for easy dispensing. It’s a very lightweight cream that offers sheer coverage – it really means it when it says it’s a complexion corrector. Count on it to even out your skintone, but don’t expect it to cover up major blemishes. I used it with concealer on key problem areas to test the level of coverage and got the below results.

Not bad, eh? I’ve worn it out a few times on weekends when I’m feeling lazy and looking to go very basic with my makeup, and haven’t found it bothers my combination skin which is another bonus. I’ll know for sure how it reacts to my oily t-zone once the 30 degree weather comes along, but for mild temperatures I don’t find it makes my skin more oily (but it’s not like it’s a product that will eliminate oil).

It comes in four shades, which may not seem like much but since it’s lightweight/sheer, an exact match isn’t necessary – just pick the closest one. It retails for $22.00, and for an all-in-one product that will come in handy over the summer, it’s worth checking out.

Do you use CC creams? How do you like yours compared to a BB cream or regular foundation?

musings from morgan : olay fresh effects

I’m always on the hunt for products that make my skincare routine easier, whether that’s through saving me time or tackling more than one issue in one product.

Olay has an entire line of products aimed at doing just that, while encouraging us to “embrace a world without filters” and be our uncensored selves. You may have seen the funky packaging on the shelves by now too – it’s their Fresh Effects line which carries products from makeup remover wipes to moisturizers, and cleansers to sunscreen.

I was given the opportunity to try out two products: the Out of this Swirled Deep Pore Clean + Exfoliating Scrub and the S’Wipe Out Refreshing Makeup Removal Cloths (cutest names ever).  I used the wipes a few times to test their performance on removing a full face of makeup, and I used the scrub over the course of a week to see how it performed on my combo skin.

First up were the wipes, which right off the bat I liked for their convenience. The pre-moistened wipes are something you can throw in an overnight or gym bag, and mine are already housed in the latter. They smell great, were gentle on my skin and did a decent job of removing my makeup. They didn’t remove every trace (my mascara, for example needed something a little more heavy duty) but if you’ve just got a little bit of makeup on they’re good for quick removal.

The exfoliating scrub I had was the Honeysuckle and White Tea scent (which smelled delightful). The product has two components – a moisture-rich cleanser ribbon paired with an exfoliating microbead ribbon to cleanse the skin and minimize pores. The product has an easy-to-use pump which puts about a quarter-sized amount of product in your hand.

This cleanser is definitely on the gentle side, and I think is a good day-to-day product if you have few skin problems. I, on the other hand, lean towards cleansers that will manage the oil in my skin and set me up to stay matte all day, so I’d recommend this if you’re looking for a basic daily cleanser that both gently exfoliates and moisturizes.

I think the entire Fresh Effects line has a ton of great products to check out, and I’m definitely curious to try the Shine Minimizing Cleanser after trying out these.

Have you tried anything from the Olay Fresh Effects line? What do you like from the selection of products?

musings from morgan : moisture magic

Is it just me, or has this felt like the winter that refuses to quit?

Perhaps we’ve just gotten lucky over the last few years and forgotten what it feels like to really have a true north winter that lasts until the bitter end. Whatever the case may be, the cold, dry air doesn’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon and quite frankly, it’s messing with me big time!

My skin and hair have both taken a beating over these bitter last few weeks, and I’ve been thankful to have two products handy to restore moisture all over when I’ve needed it.

As a girl who dyes her hair often, the weather isn’t the only thing that dries my locks out, and that’s why having an intense treatment like Tresemme’s Renewal Hair & Scalp Conditioning Mask is important during times like these. We know using shampoo and conditioner daily comes with it’s own pros and cons, so taking one day a week to break from your usual washing routine to deep condition is really helpful, especially with the dry weather.

The product contains tea tree extract and sunflower seed oil and gives high-quality results that repair your hair, leaving it feeling super soft and easy to work with. I’ve seen it as low as $3.99 at Shoppers Drug Mart on sale in recent weeks, so if you’re looking for something to soften your ‘do, definitely check it out.

As for my skin, you may remember I mentioned in a previous post I’ve been dealing with dry skin this winter like never before. As a result, it’s been a bit of trial and error in finding something that relieves the irritation that comes with having dry skin, and the Spectro Intense Rehydration Face & Body Moisturizer was a hit for me. I was familiar with Spectro products growing up to fix my blemishes, but I had no idea they did moisturizer (and even eczema care products!) and was even more impressed I had a product in front of me that was for the body and face.

It’s definitely made for those of us with sensitive skin. It relives itching, redness and is scent and irritant-free; therefore you can use it without worrying about a potential allergic reaction. The product is super thick – it’s a little hard to tell, but I tried to capture its consistency in the image below as best as possible. I’d even say it’s thicker than a body butter, and a little goes a long way.  It’s quite a relief for those ultra dry spots like elbows, knees, hands and cheeks and in the cold of winter, it really does save the day.

I’m dreaming of warmer weather (but know I’ll be annoyed when my t-zone loses control on our always-humid summer days), but until we get there I’ve got these to rely on to get through these last few weeks of winter!
