musings from morgan : cargo hd foundation

Foundation is one of those things that isn’t really one-size-fits-all. It can take a long time to find one that suits your needs, especially because you have to factor in colour, skin type and preferences for factors like weight, coverage, finish and more.

Personally, I am partial to medium-to-full coverage, matte finish products. I have combination skin with a temperamental t-zone and am always looking for something that will last all day. I had the chance to try Cargo’s HD Picture Perfect foundation, which promised everything I prefer in a foundation so I was pretty stoked to get testing.

An oil-free formula, this HD product is perfect if you’re looking for something to use in a setting where you’ll be taking photos, like a studio. HD foundations like this contain light-diffusing products, meaning your skin will look flawless even under the most intense, brightly-lit situations (think right under the hot lights of a photoshoot). It also means the product is meant to blur skin and give an airbrush looking finish and will blend seamlessly.

The shade I tried was 1N, which appears to be the lightest shade in the line. Unfortunately, it was really yellow on me (I’m super fair and lean more pink than yellow – you can see the difference in my neck and face) but may actually make for a good summer foundation if I catch a tan…but we’ll have to wait and see. I applied with a beauty blender and was so impressed with the finish and coverage. It truly blends beautifully on the skin and a little goes a long way to mask imperfections. It’s also suitable for all skin types, and I found it worked great on my skin.

I can get away with wearing it when I use a brightening concealer and some contouring products as a more dramatic, going-out look, but as an everyday foundation the shade is just too yellow. If it was a perfect match, this would no question be a go-to foundation for round the clock wear!

At $42.00, it’s a great option if you’re in the market for an HD foundation and on par with most like it. Grab it from Cargo Cosmetics directly, Murale stores, murale.ca or well.ca!

best of bridal beauty : a few of my favourite things …

Our Bridal Beauty Preview for Fall/Winter 2015-2016 was a smash success, and it had me thinking that I should really take a moment to share some of my favourite items for knocking out some bridal beauty.

Like any makeup artist worth her beauty blender, I have a huge kit, but a selection of products that are a must, must, must. I have products I love for creating a smokey eye, a classic twist, a vintage red lip. So keep reading … because I’m about to share.

The Red Lip …

Hands down, it’s NARS. Always NARS. My favourite product(s) is their Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in either Cruella, Red Square or Pop Life. The matte finish stays put but doesn’t look dry and for an all day event like a wedding you need something more matte than glossy.  If it’s not the pencils – it’s their new Audacious lipstick colours and you can take your pick : Rita, Marlene, Geraldine, Lana  – which range from true red to a more orange based (which I think is hot for a bride!)

The Rosy Lip …

Rose, Plum, and anything softly pink are the other bridal favourite.  To be honest, I smushed everything down into a palette, and didn’t write the names anywhere, but I do have my favourites in a tube. They include : Plumful, Syrup, and Twig by MAC; Casablanca by Tom Ford; and pretty much anything by Bobbi Brown! And while we are here, let’s talk about nude lips, again, I’m going to throw to NARS for Belle Du Jour and Bobbi Brown for a colour I have called Uber Pink (which isn’t a bright pink at all).

The Eyeshadow …

Makeup artists have their shadows they swear by. For example, it doesn’t matter what other palette I have in my kit … I’m a slave for MAC Shroom. I will always have a pot or seven of it in my kit(s). But right now, I’m favouring Lorac Pro Palette for it’s neutral but shimmery shades however this is currently not available for Canada so you have to online shop it.  My Smashbox Double Exposure Palette is hitting the mark for more glam styles (and you can get this at Murale or Shoppers Drug Mart for those Optimum points!) and I’m am currently obsessed with TooFaced Chocolate and Semi-Sweet Chocolate Eyeshadow palettes.  Both the Smashbox and the TooFaced Palettes, I find, really stick to the eye … not a lot of shadow fallout so I really enjoy using them for shading a heavier look.

The Flawless Skin …

Again, I’m very much attached to my MAC Face and Body, because it allows me to adjust and layer as needed without getting to cake face. But for concealers, I’m devoted to my Amazing Cosmetics Concealer in various shades from Ivory to Light Honey, MAC Select Cover-up in those super portable triangle containers, and also, Stila Perfecting Concealer.

If I happen to have a client with acne issues, I’ve been reaching a lot for me Estee Lauder Clear Difference BB Creme, which for me, lays down a nice layer of coverage without looking dry, cakey or messy. For mature skin, I find their EE Creme to be effective as well.

Also, you can get great skin without primers. For the eyes, it’s always Urban Decay eye primers, and for the skin, I’ve been using Makeup Forevers new Step 1 Primers.

The Blush, The Highlight and The Contour …

Well, this list could go on forever, huh? Ha ha. I would have to say my friends right now are Cliniques new Highlighter and Contour Chubby Pencils. Just for the ease of use alone.  But I am also loving my new Stila Shape and Shade Custom Contour Duo and NARS The Matte Multiples in Altai.  As these are creams, after I set the cream product, I’ll go back in with a powder set for intensity, so I’m often reaching for Makeup Forever’s new Pro Sculpting Duos (which are insane – j’adore!), and my Aerin (Estee Lauder) Kaleidoscope Palette especially when the bride doesn’t want too much shimmer/shine.

For blush, well, hmmmm. I always layer cream under powder and my favourites are from rms beauty in Modest, Smile and Demure.  I also favour Makeup Forever’s HD Cream Blushes and NARS The Multiple in Puerto Vallarta or Altai.

For powder blushes, it’s always a selection of pinks and peaches from MAC that I lightly dust on.

The Lashes and Brows …

I currently carry all three shades of Cargo’s Brow Kit in my bag and use both the powder and the wax for perfecting brows. But I also lean on MAC Brown Pencils as well and I love these for their easy application and also the spooly on the other end.

To define the lashes, it’s always Maybelline Great Lash in various formulas ranging from brown to dark brown to black. I rarely use pencil liners, but when I do, I’m using Cargo’s Swimmables or Urban Decay’s 24/7 pencils.

The Hair …

Let’s start with caring for the hair … which I normally don’t carry in my kit, but suggest to my brides. Especially after the long cold winter we are JUST getting rid of, brides need to start nourishing their hair back into shape.  I’m currently recommending the Nexxus Therappe and Humectress line of shampoo and conditioner for longer length hair that needs to be brought back to life from a dry season. I would also recommend OGX Vitamin E Shampoo and Conditioner for hair health. I suggest brides also pick up OGX’s Penetrating Oil and work it into the ends of the hair  – especially if they plan to leave the hair long and loose for the big day.

The Updo …

Well, I am sure bobby pins are a no brainer – right? I’m picking them up by the box at Sally Beauty in shades of black, brown and silver.  SalonCare is the brand available, but there is also Marianna.

To reduce  oil or add texture to the hair, it’s always Not Your Mother’s Dry Shampoo.  For tousled perfection, I’m really liking Tresemme’s Perfectly (un)Done Hairspray. I also like their big cans of spray and will usually carry a couple of extra hold formulas, and also climate control. To tame frizzies, or induce a sheen, I’m going back to Not Your Mothers for their Smooth Moves hair creme.

For hair prep and finishing, I’m also relying on Sally Hershberger’s Signature Line (available at Shoppers Drug Mart) mainly using the Keratin Repair Spray and also, the Galm Waves Texture Spray.

So that’s it!

My kit in one really long blog post.   Would love to know what other artists are using in their kits, but would also love to answer questions any brides or beauty bunnies out there might have about any of the above products! You know where to reach me : beautymail@blushpretty.com!

Have a great hump day all!

musings from morgan : rococo nail apparel

I have exciting news – while I didn’t count it as an official “resolution,” I made a commitment just before Christmas to stop biting my nails for good. I went for an embarrassing manicure on December 24 and vowed to let it be the start of a new era. Two weeks later…so far, so good.

While I definitely don’t have long and beautiful nails just yet, I’m far less embarrassed to show them to the world. What does this mean? I can proudly review nail polish now!

I had the chance to try a brand I’ve never heard of, Rococo Nail Apparel based out of the UK. According to the brand, they’re quite popular at London Fashion Week and promise high-quality product, on-trend shades made to last.

Right off the bat the packaging was impressive – the container came in a box! Pretty fancy for nail polish, I think (then again my knowledge in this area is limited). The shade was Night Scene Molton Lava, a shimmery brown from their Autumn 2014 collection.

I found the polish really easy to apply and highly pigmented. In two coats, I was happy with the results. The colour itself was one I normally wouldn’t select, but there’s no doubt the quality was there. I also found it dried really quickly and had a high-shine finish.

You can find this product at Murale.ca and stores for $20 a bottle.

holiday shop #1 : first weekend of december …

It’s official, we are T minus 19 to the big day. Today also marks the first weekend of holiday shopping for many (not everyone starts their holiday shopping early … like … 95% of us) and I thought that I would direct today’s shopping post to the ones who need the most help : men.

For the average male, there are many women to shop for and you have to make sure the gift is pretty, gives the right message (a lace nighty is probably not the best gift for your co-worker, even if she pointed it out to you in the shop window and even if everyone says she is your “work wife”), and most of all, is perfect for the recipient.

Without further ado …

The Work Wife : Neither of you care to have a “dating relationship” with one another, but you enjoy each other’s company because you have the same humour, hate the same co-workers, and share the same gripes about the office. She’s exactly like you … just in female form! You owe this girl more than a “holiday lunch” on you or that gift card that gets you a meal at Swiss Chalet, Jack Astors or Harveys … her choice. Why not try The Body Shop? May we suggest the Hand Cream Trios in Nutty (our pick!) or Seasonal. Working in a scent free office (perhaps that is something you gripe to each other about …)? Then gift her a set of Real Techniques makeup brushes. The Core Set is always a proper option and she will have everything she needs for a basic flawless face!

The Always-Realiable Assistant : She keeps you in check, keeps you on time, and basically keeps you out of trouble. Your gift should say that you appreciate everything she does and if you had that kind of pull her holiday bonus would match her salary … but you don’t so this is the next best thing. Think holiday palettes! MAC Cosmetics always has great collections come the holiday season and they are always the best bet because the packaging gives everything a luxe feel. Put on your list the MAC Keepsakes Face  which is sure to please and look pretty all unwrapped and partner it up with one of the brush kits too. The Viva Glamourous is also a good bet!

The Best Bro (that’s actually a girl) : Sure, she can hang at the bar and follow the ball game, and she can throw down beer better then your best bro who actually is a bro. But that doesn’t mean your gift to her needs to be a Raptors Jersey. She’s still a chick, dude. You could go the way of your Assistant and do a palette, but it can also be more simple in package since the two of you will probably do the whole “you didn’t have to get me anything” shuffle when actually exchanging gifts. Bobbi Brown is my favourite for beautiful makeup options housed in simple but just as beautiful packaging. Perhaps their Ultimate Lip Gloss Set? Wearable colours for any event in a formulation that is never too sticky or waxy. I wouldn’t mind the Mini Eye and Lip Palette either.

The Super Hard to Shop for Sister : Your sister, whether older or younger will always have your back. Period. Your gift should be one that says you can’t stand her but you love her anyways, and it is the holidays and one of only two times in a year you would spend money on her cause she sucks the other 363 days left over, and you knew she would love this gift.  Shall we direct you to The Luna Mini by Foreo (available at Murale). A T-Sonic cleansing device for all skin types, this portable device deep cleans the skin – resulting in a softer, smoother and more youthful looking complexion almost immediately. You can then hit her with the jab that she needed an anti aging regimen anyway …

The Greatest Girlfriend Ever or the Most Wonderful Wife Ever : Nothing we  say will every top what your significant other is ACTUALLY telling to you. Our best advice to you gentlemen is to listen carefully, follow the very subtle hints, and buy what is on those marked pages in all the magazines and catalogues that she just happens to leave wide open on top of the remote control, by your favourite snack food, or on top of you pillow.  That is the key to your holiday happiness … that and you probably shouldn’t buy anything for your Work Wife … :)
