mondays+moms : makeup? what makeup?

I have a confession to make. I actually don’t wear a lot of makeup.

I love makeup.  I have lots of makeup. I eat-drink-breathe-makeup.

I just don’t happen to wear tonnes of it.

My typical day consists of working through the morning; doing lunchroom supervision around, well, lunchtime; hot yoga; and then an afternoon of either driving around to meet clientele or an afternoon of driving around to various after-school activities.

My makeup routine is quite minimal and I think both my colleagues and clientele find this quite comical, you know … being a beauty artist and all. I thought I would share with you a couple of items that I have in rotation right now. The pic above shows what I might put on in the morning if I have a moment.

rms beauty un-cover up in 22 and cream eyeshadow in lunar : I adore this product thanks to the sheer layers you can apply with it. Never cakey or heavy, always the right amount. With the foundation, I simply apply as needed – usually under the eyes and around the nose. Sometimes the cheeks.  I like applying it over my Pelle Beauty face oil and Consonant Body sunscreen – I find it applies best after I have allowed both of these products to sink in a bit. The cream eyeshadow I actually use as my highlighter. While they do have the living luminizer in the line, I find lunar to highlight my skin tone a bit better.

bite beauty : If I’m going to brighten up my look, it’s always with lip colours and bite has the best selection of colours in my favourite form : chubby pencils. From the everyday rose to a bright and electric orange, I carry a few of these pencils in my regular makeup bag. My other favourite is NARS Lip Pencils and I look to their matte pencils when I want statement lips.

aerin rose lip conditioner : My lips, despite my best efforts will always remain chapped and  dry. It’s not fair, but what can you do. I find this lip conditioner allows me to apply once in the morning and get to about late afternoon without having to reapply.  Added bonus : the scent is quite nice!

MAC veluxe brow liner and tweezerman tweezers : Okay. I’m kind of lying about the tweezers and using them everyday because  I don’t get the chance to tweeze each morning, but the moments I do – normally after glancing into the rearview mirror on my way out the driveway (damn you natural sunlight) – I’ll make it a priority to tweeze later that night. I prefer slanted tips for the best grasp and Tweezerman has a larger selection of tweezers to choose from. For filling in my brows, I like dual-ended brow fillers – either with colour on one end and a spoolie on the other OR colour on the end and brow gel on the other. MAC’s pencil gives the soft look of powder but defines the brows like a champ!

tom ford eye defining pencil in metallic mink and stila smudge stick waterproof liner in emerald : I don’t wear mascara only because I find when applying to myself – I’m pretty messy with it. So I rely in eye pencils to define my eyes.  I love inky blacks and browns and love the Tom Ford pencils (MAC pencils are pretty great too!) and I usually apply this under the lashes and at the root to fake the look of more lashes and artfully applied mascara. Over the top lid, I’ll use a bright colour like Stila’s emerald which after application LOOKS like liquid liner – so pigmented. It’s all about the subtle pop!

I’m not sure if there is anything I would change about my makeup routine – it’s works for me and the amount of time I have to get ready for the day. Sometimes I look in the mirror and think : I really should use my primer … or my concealer … and maybe I should fill in that crease. But then I think to myself that my job is to apply beauty to others – not BE the beauty.

Well, that’s my Monday morning stephanie-ism.  Hope you all have a great week!

the evolution of concealer: josie maran argan creamy concealer crayon

Look at me. No. Seriously. You have no choice but to look at me. As declared in a previous post, my goal is to swatch more and post more pictures. I’m holding up my end of the bargain here … so you know, deal!

Normally in warmer weather, I wear as less makeup/base as possible. I ditch even the lightest of foundations and tinted moisturizers and lean toward spot concealing. Right now, I have three different concealers in rotation: NARS, Stila, Cle de Peau … and just added to the line up: Josie Maran Argan Creamy Concealer Crayon.

There are three reasons why I  immediately was drawn to this concealer:

*  it’s organic
*  it’s in the shape of a crayon (which I love for eye shadow pencils and lip pencils)
*  it’s josie maran – an organic brand I adore

I’ve only been wearing this product for about 1/2 a week, so I can’t say I can give a full review, but upon first swatching I can tell you that it’s as creamy as it states in its name. Some concealer pencils that I have tried in the past have been chalky – heck … any concealer can be chalky – but this pencil glides on like any glossy chubby pencil lip colour: with ease and no effort.

With its fully sharpened tip, I can get right into the corner of the eyes, around the nose, and pretty much over any pimple. No brush required. As you can see from the photo above (right) I made several swatches.  I blended and patted in the colour using my ring finger and voila … see picture on the left! I think that it was a perfect match for my skin and you can see it pretty much disappeared.

The above photos were taken in natural light with a sky light directly above me and that’s what matters most to me: how the products looks in natural light. I’m pretty pleased!

You can see that along with my concealer, I also purchased some Marc Jacobs lippies. A review on that to come, but below is a pic of the lipstick in action. If you have heard any hype on the Marc Jacob’s cosmetic line, I will say – it’s not hype. What they say about the lip colours is true – so creamy, so wearable, sooooo in la-la-la-love.

That’s this week’s swatch review. I’m working on my photography … *working on* being the operative phrase …

fresh year, fresh start: the green

Alright. So I have spent the week chatting you up with new base products, lip colours, blushes, liners, and mascaras. A whole bunch of items you can either add to your kit or create a whole new one with (the latter sounds so much more fun, doesn’t it?). But here is something to think about: greening your routine …

I know. It is hard to give up on your hard-working, quality, lush, not-so-green products. They work for you. They last long and stay put throughout the day. They make you feel great about yourself. Why change? It’s true – nothing can really replace that red lip color you have loved for years. Or the cleanser that has kept you clear since high school. I get it. But I also know that choosing better products for your skin, health and for the environment is in the back of your mind too. You want to try but don’t know where to begin. With the onset of many new and independent brands, you aren’t sure what really works and what doesn’t. Lastly, some of those green brands can be a bit pricey! Believe me I know.

So how about for the new year, you aim to switch out or incorporate one (or two if you’re an over-achiever) organic beauty product to your routine? Manageable, right? Easy on the budget, yes? Here are some suggestions.

rms beauty “un” cover-up

Since we use base products ALL over the face, it makes sense to try and green yourself here first. After all, what you put on your skin goes IN your skin. With four colours in the range, you can find a colour that suits you best or mix to match. Lightweight and creamy, this “un” cover-up blends easily and hides imperfections well. You can also layer to build coverage. In small clear pots, a little bit goes a long way! Available at The Detox Market and online.

S.W. Basics of Brooklyn Cleanser

Imagine a product with no more than five ingredients that takes off your makeup and cleans the face with the swipe of a cotton pad. Repeat: five ingredients. All organic. Stop imagining and just try it. So easy to use and so gentle on the skin, this cleanser removes dirt, makeup (even mascara) and grime with ease. Nighttime cleaning has never been breezier. Just moisten a cotton pad and wipe the skin, rinse with water. You are done. Available at BlushPretty. (Ahem)

Ilia Beauty Lipstick

Before, you could only find organic lipsticks in very sheer shades of everyday basics and neutrals. That was before. With Ilia, you can find brighter pinks and deeper reds. Complete with long wear and a creamy, no drag, application these lipsticks provide all the pigment you need for bold lips. No more worrying about how much lead is in your lipstick and how much of it you are consuming … there are options out there for you! Available at Jacob+Sebastian and The Detox Market.

So this ends our fresh year, fresh start series … What do I have in store for you next week? Well, I suppose you will just have to come back …
