31 days to a prettier 2017 : clean yourself up …

If you are like any other women in the world, it’s probably super rare that you get to have a really good shower and wash, yes? It’s not that you aren’t hygienic or don’t shower … you just don’t have the time to do things as properly as you would like to.

Well … it’s Saturday … and you’re going to give yourself just that.

Day 21 : January 21

Give your hair a good wash. Give your body a good scrub.

Most days of the week, if you’re lucky before work, you jump in the shower, throw around some body wash, massage through some a 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner and jump right back out before you can say “I need coffee”. You’re clean … but you don’t feel like you did anything. For me – the power of a shower is EVERYTHING. You step out of the real world for a moment. You think about nonsense. You think about deep stuff. Heck – some of my best decisions happen in the shower. SHOWERS are essential to a balanced life.

Today, take the time to shower and really clean up. Start by lathering up your hair for a good shampoo. While your hair sits with shampoo for a few moments, use a body scrub to exfoliate your body. Rinse away both your body scrub and rinse out your shampoo. Move on to a deep conditioning treatment. You can either use an actual deep conditioning product or hair mask if you wish, but in a pinch, leaving on your regular conditioner longer but also in a liberal amount can also do the trick. Apply your conditioner or mask from root to tip, focusing more on the ends of the hair twist up high on your head and secure with a jaw clip.

While you’re letting your products sit, move on to another task you normally rush through – hair removal! Whether you shave or epilate, now is the perfect time to do a thorough job leaving your skin super smooth. Once you’re done shaving, finish up with your soap or body wash. From there, go ahead and rinse out your hair mask or conditioner, using a wide-tooth comb to detangle and tame your hair.

Turn off the water. Grab a towel. Dry off.

Done. And well done. Hope you made some good decisions!

TIP : I’m guilty of having the hottest showers ever. But I know deep down, it’s not good for me, my scalp or my skin. If you must have a hot shower, do it in intervals. Perhaps just in the beginning for a minute or two, and then right before you step out. Switch between warm water and cooler temperatures in between.

HOMEWORK : No homework – it’s Saturday!

31 days to a prettier 2017 : head to toe beauty …

Over the past 20 days, we’ve focused on beauty from all angles top to bottom – so why stop? Beauty is not just about makeup, it’s about how you feel!

Day 20 : January 20

Start a dry brush routine!

I’m a huge fan of dry brushing the entire body. It’s a quick and easy way to exfoliate the entire body from head to toe, while also promoting detoxification and circulation. It’s even been known to help reduce the appearance of cellulite (yes, please!)

To dry brush, you just need to invest in a firmly bristled dry brush with a long enough handle to reach all over. Brushes are available almost anywhere they sell body care items, so it shouldn’t be too hard for you to find.

Using your dry brush, you want to use short brisk strings in an upwards motion, starting at the legs and working your way up to the stomach, arms, and your back (which is where a long handled brush comes in handy). Experts suggest 10-12 strings per body part before moving on to the next area. The best time to dry brush is early in the day, right before you jump in the shower.

YouTube has plenty of instructional videos to see how its done. And you can Google and shop around for different brushes.

Brush away!

TIP : Be firm with your grip and pressure … the exfoliating action plus the deep pressure will get your day started off right.

HOMEOWRK : Make it a habit. Even if you just have two minutes before you jump in the shower, dry brush. Eventually, it will become an automatic practice (like brushing your teeth) and you’ll do it on autopilot each morning!

holiday wishlist 2014

It’s that time of year again – the holidays are upon on us! We wanted to share our roundup of wishlist items since so many beauty brands pull out all the stops for limited edition products, sets and gifts (but don’t be fooled – beauty isn’t all we want for Christmas!).

Laura Amaya

My family does Secret Santa every year and I’ve just finished sending out the invites so that we can get the ball rolling on it. With this yearly family tradition, we can post online a wishlist of things we’d love. I’ve narrowed down my list and this year I have put it down to these 3 items:

Miss Dior Eau de Parfum (Sephora $94.00 1.7 oz bottle) – I’ve been eyeing this fragrance for months but refused to buy it during my recent pregnancy because I experienced lots of nausea, and every now and again scents would make me ill. I refuse to allow that to happen to this amazingly delicious perfume!

NARSissist Eyeshadow Palette (Sephora, $85.00) – I usually don’t splurge on eye palettes for myself (they almost always end up in my makeup kit for my brides) but then came this beautiful palette of 15 shadows perfect for creating everyday looks and transforming into sultry evening glam. My eyes beamed when I saw this beaut, here’s hoping it ends up under the tree for me!

Crock Pot 6.5 QT slow cooker (Wal-Mart $58.93) – I know you’re probably going to laugh but ever since becoming a mom there are two things I value most above all else PRACTICALITY & SIMPLICITY! And this baby is perfect for just that, knowing I can throw a hunk of meat with veggies and some seasonings into this baby setting it and forgetting it makes my heart sing with happiness ( oh how things change as we get older… *Le Sigh*)

Regina Salvador

As the holidays are fast approaching and limited editions makeup sets pops up all around us, picking the one set that you really, really want can be very daunting.

My list started to grow as soon as Sephora started to showcase their holiday merchandise on their website. I was like a kid in a candy store (but I was actually staring at my iPad screen).

The New Exclusive Limited Edition item that caught my eye as soon as I saw it is Formula X Paint The Town (Sephora, $69.00). This set consists of 22 mini nail polishes that come in a reusable paint tin. As a nail polish fanatic this is an amazing set with colours that are great to wear on their own or for layering as well!

Morgan Cadenhead

I’ve been drooling over so many beauty sets out for the holidays, but the one that’s left me starstruck is the MAKE UP FOR EVER Makeup Station (Sephora, $345.00) I’ve left it on my wishlist as the price tag makes it an unlikely gift from Santa, but hey…it’s a wishlist after all!

The set contains everything from primer, setting powder, Artist Shadows, eyeliner, setting spray, lip liner, lipstick, lashes…oh gosh, the list goes on. It’s a makeup junkie’s dream! Who’s got an extra $350 to scoop this up for me? ;)

What’s on your wishlist?

expert advice : hair tips for transitioning to fall

Image courtesy of marin at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

If you haven’t noticed already, the temperature is cooling down here in Toronto (little by little) and most of us have traded our shorts and bikinis for sweaters and boots…fall is creeping up on us.

Personally, I find dealing with my hair in the summer is a whole different ball game from working with it in the fall/winter. Keeping this in mind, I turned to one of our BP experts Crista Aguinaldo for some tips on making the transition from summer to fall easy for both managing my style and keeping my locks healthy.

Her advice…

  • Reassess your hair and make sure you have a shampoo & conditioner for your appropriate hair type to better deal with the cooler weather that is on its way.
  • Treat your hair and scalp to a good clarifying shampoo and treatment mask (protein-based for damaged hair or moisture-based for dry hair) to help renew your hair from the damage that may have been caused by your summer fun. Even if your hair feels fine, UV rays are pretty damaging, so it’s great if you can replenish and renew before the change of weather throws you for a loop.
  • Get a trim, or better yet, a hair cut! I know lots of ladies out there hate going to the salon for a cut (especially if they’re trying to grow it out), but a light trim of just the ends at least quarterly (although the recommended time frame is 4-7 weeks) will keep your locks looking great. It will also help keep the shape of your current haircut, or encourage you to go for a new look!
  • Ditch the sun-bleached-blond look and go a little more earthy. As the falls leaves change around you, you can start to look washed out pretty quickly, so fall is a good time to get into deeper, richer and more vibrant tones.

Have you already started working on some of Crista’s tips? I’ll be looking into treatments for my dry, sun-damaged hair!

spotlight on : regina sterling

Name: Regina Sterling

My role with BP: Blog Contributor

How I got into working with BP: I heard about Steph and BP through Elaine [Atkins] (who I’ve known for a few years now through Avon and being an avid reader of her blog Toronto Beauty Reviews). I would read about Elaine’s positive experiences from attending numerous BlushPretty: The Beauty Board events, reading BP’s blog, Instagram and Twitter feeds. When I won the CLEAR: Scalp and Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner on the blog, I decided to attend the 2013 BlushPretty: The Beauty Board event and officially met Steph. She contacted me on Facebook on New Year’s Eve 2013 and asked me to be a blog contributor and I said yes!

The best part of my job: Besides trying out new products and writing about them, I’ve been able to meet quite a few of the ladies on BlushPretty Team. All of them have been very nice and welcoming. I’ve also been able to attend events at the studio and outside the to learn about new products.

My secret beauty weapon: Broadway Nails: imPRESS manicure Press-On Nails.  When I don’t have the time to paint my nails these are my go-to’s. They are very easy to apply, durable and will last for up to 7 days.

My must share beauty tip: Ask questions and opinions on beauty and skincare products that you are new to using or want to try out. Go to the people who know about the products and has the patience to answer all of your questions.
