countdown to christmas : the body shop gift sets … for men!

bodyshopformen

You know who the hardest person to shop for is … men. Actually, perhaps not the men in your life like your dad, your husband, your brother … but men who are teachers. Specifically men who are teachers who also happen to be your child’s teacher and you need to purchase a gift for them … stat! Other men, who may fall in this category may include : their (as in your children) bus driver, their martial arts teacher, their basketball coach. No kids but still have men in your life? Well, what about your condo concierge whom always ensures your multiple online shopping packages are accepted and kept safe until you pick them up?  Your “Uncle Bob” – dad’s bestie from way back who is always shows up on the holidays? Or what about that guy that you picked out for Secret Santa at the office? These are all examples of men in your life that deserve to be gifted during the holiday season, yet you might not know their favourite colour or their proper shirt size. Womp Womp.

So – men – officially as hard to shop for as women … until The Body Shop, that is.  Plenty of their gift sets for their rich lotions and creams are just as suitable for men, if not tailor-made for them.  I find there are several options in their hand creams that have pleasant, masculine-friendly scents, and also, masculine-friendly packaging (because sometimes – that does matter!)

This season, my picks would definitely be The Hemp Moisture High Gift Set (shown above). It’s inexpensive at just $15 plus HST, but is luxe in feel and appearance. It would be my choice for a Secret Santa gift or a teacher’s gift.

The Almond Hand and Nail Expert Gift (shown above) is my second choice, and I would gift this more to the male friend who appreciates a neat and well groomed appearance, a great-smelling lotion, and tidy nails. A male co-worker even, perhaps? Just $35 plus HST.

My bonus choice, hands down, is The Modern Man’s Grooming Kit which is just $15 plus HST, but filled with all the grooming tools a man would want, need and use … but never admit to loving (because you know men!). Large Metal Clippers, a nail grooming tool, nail scissors and a comb. All the things a gentleman should own to look proper and neat daily. This gift would not only be great for teachers – but I would also pick it up as a stocking stuffer for my dad and brothers – now doubt about it!

As you most likely know, The Body Shop is a Canadian staple and can be found at most major Malls across the country!

We’ve got 8 days left folks – how is the shopping going?

musings from morgan : soft hands, warm kisses shea

Shea is an ingredient I was always gravitate towards. Having discovered The Body Shop’s Shea body butter years ago, any time I’ve seen the African tree’s extract included in a body care product I’ve immediately been intrigued. It’s incredibly moisturizing and gentle, and works its magic whether on its own as natural shea butter or in products such as The Body Shop’s entire line of shea products.

Enter a perfect little gift to have on your radar – Soft Hands, Warm Kisses Shea from (you guessed it) The Body Shop. A hand cream and lip butter in one package, it’s a perfect little gift to hang on the tree (it’s packaged so it can do just that!) or fit neatly in a stocking.

The hand cream itself is lightweight yet moisturizing, with a sweet scent that’s not too overwhelming. The lip butter is actually a product I’ve had for some time now, and it’s a creamy, hydrating product that can tackle dry, chapped lips during these cold months. It’s a perfect duo for anyone who needs a boost in the moisturizing department and could use products that travel well – these are right at home in any handbag.

The gift retails for just $12.00 (a $16.00 value) and get this – it also supports The Body Shop’s partner charity for the season, War Child. Each purchase of the gift will put approximately 7 cents to the charity which goes towards funding a class for a child. It’s a gift that will not only make its recipient happy, but a child as well.

Happy holiday shopping!

holiday shop #1 : first weekend of december …

It’s official, we are T minus 19 to the big day. Today also marks the first weekend of holiday shopping for many (not everyone starts their holiday shopping early … like … 95% of us) and I thought that I would direct today’s shopping post to the ones who need the most help : men.

For the average male, there are many women to shop for and you have to make sure the gift is pretty, gives the right message (a lace nighty is probably not the best gift for your co-worker, even if she pointed it out to you in the shop window and even if everyone says she is your “work wife”), and most of all, is perfect for the recipient.

Without further ado …

The Work Wife : Neither of you care to have a “dating relationship” with one another, but you enjoy each other’s company because you have the same humour, hate the same co-workers, and share the same gripes about the office. She’s exactly like you … just in female form! You owe this girl more than a “holiday lunch” on you or that gift card that gets you a meal at Swiss Chalet, Jack Astors or Harveys … her choice. Why not try The Body Shop? May we suggest the Hand Cream Trios in Nutty (our pick!) or Seasonal. Working in a scent free office (perhaps that is something you gripe to each other about …)? Then gift her a set of Real Techniques makeup brushes. The Core Set is always a proper option and she will have everything she needs for a basic flawless face!

The Always-Realiable Assistant : She keeps you in check, keeps you on time, and basically keeps you out of trouble. Your gift should say that you appreciate everything she does and if you had that kind of pull her holiday bonus would match her salary … but you don’t so this is the next best thing. Think holiday palettes! MAC Cosmetics always has great collections come the holiday season and they are always the best bet because the packaging gives everything a luxe feel. Put on your list the MAC Keepsakes Face  which is sure to please and look pretty all unwrapped and partner it up with one of the brush kits too. The Viva Glamourous is also a good bet!

The Best Bro (that’s actually a girl) : Sure, she can hang at the bar and follow the ball game, and she can throw down beer better then your best bro who actually is a bro. But that doesn’t mean your gift to her needs to be a Raptors Jersey. She’s still a chick, dude. You could go the way of your Assistant and do a palette, but it can also be more simple in package since the two of you will probably do the whole “you didn’t have to get me anything” shuffle when actually exchanging gifts. Bobbi Brown is my favourite for beautiful makeup options housed in simple but just as beautiful packaging. Perhaps their Ultimate Lip Gloss Set? Wearable colours for any event in a formulation that is never too sticky or waxy. I wouldn’t mind the Mini Eye and Lip Palette either.

The Super Hard to Shop for Sister : Your sister, whether older or younger will always have your back. Period. Your gift should be one that says you can’t stand her but you love her anyways, and it is the holidays and one of only two times in a year you would spend money on her cause she sucks the other 363 days left over, and you knew she would love this gift.  Shall we direct you to The Luna Mini by Foreo (available at Murale). A T-Sonic cleansing device for all skin types, this portable device deep cleans the skin – resulting in a softer, smoother and more youthful looking complexion almost immediately. You can then hit her with the jab that she needed an anti aging regimen anyway …

The Greatest Girlfriend Ever or the Most Wonderful Wife Ever : Nothing we  say will every top what your significant other is ACTUALLY telling to you. Our best advice to you gentlemen is to listen carefully, follow the very subtle hints, and buy what is on those marked pages in all the magazines and catalogues that she just happens to leave wide open on top of the remote control, by your favourite snack food, or on top of you pillow.  That is the key to your holiday happiness … that and you probably shouldn’t buy anything for your Work Wife … :)

loved by laura : drops of youth eye concentrate

The Body Shop has been around for years and has been known not only for their humane stance but for their quality products as well. Their new product, the Drops of Youth Eye Concentrate roller is no exception – it doesn’t skimp on quality. I have never used an eye roller product before so this was an experience. I went in with no expectations and came out quite happy with the results.

Made from Edelweiss plant stem cells, it possesses renowned skin renewal properties and is enriched with community fair trade organic babassu oil.

Its structure reminds me of correction pens, containing a roller ball with a pump. This is a routine perfect for morning right before your put on your moisturizer or eye cream. The liquid goes on cold and as you move the eye roller in a figure eight motion around your eye lids it feels like a gentle massage. This was a relaxing experience and it felt like a nice gentle eye lid massage each time I did it. The product claims to create firmer looking skin around the eyes. The liquid itself is opaque and sticky and once dry does have a tightening feeling. I also found it brightened up the eye area.

Studies by The Body Shop showed that 78% of users agreed their eye bags appeared reduced, 77% agreed that fine lines also appeared reduced and 80% of those tested agreed that their eyes looked less tired.

As a consumer I think this product is worth a try. I have always been on the lookout for a nice eye cream that brightens under my eyes, and the relaxing massage adds a nice step in my morning makeup routine.

You can purchase the Drops of Youth Eye concentrate roller at your nearest Body Shop store or online for $30.

stephanie-isms: summer flings …

Whoops – it’s August 1, 2014. Where has summer gone? Better yet … where has my blogging gone? Ha!

I have been enjoying way too much of the summer and even more so … I’ve been having enjoying a steady rotation of good products to keep me looking breezy, beachy and pretty. Since we have hit the halfway mark … I thought it would be good to share my current summer loves …

Secret Refresh Body Spray in Citrus Breeze: a glistening, body complete with a bit of a afterglow from active movement (beach v-ball anyone?) is fabulous … but complete with stick to match … er … not so much. This citrusy scented body spray from Secret’s new Destinations collection is the perfect quick fix when you go from the beach to patio party. It delivers 48-hours of door protection … the perfect escape.

Philips Satin Soft Epilator: as a longtime fan of epilators, I’m in love with my new SatinSoft epilator which can be used wet or dry. Quick and easy to use, it leaves my legs smooth for at least 7 days before I feel even the slight peek of stubble. Compact and tiny, it’s also my ideal mate for travel. Bonus: comes with a dry brush to exfoliate the legs before removal!

Foreo Mini Luna: days spent out in the sun and hanging out can take a beating on my complexion regardless of SPF and the widest brim hat, so I’ve been treating my skin to this Ah-Mah-Zing deep-cleansing facial brush. My skin looks brighter and smoother with just a minute each morning and night. Two speeds for the most optimal cleanse. The best part: I’ve charged it once since I received it in June 2014 and it hasn’t lost any power since. Available at Murale!

Cargo Essential Lip Gloss in Rio: when the weather’s warm, I try to wear as little possible on the face, so a great lip gloss is the perfect “quick” makeup look. This Cargo treat is high shine and long wear which is exactly what you are looking for in summertime lips. Rio is also a great summer colour, a hint of orange which is a great switch up from pink.

Revlon ColorStay Moisture Stain in Shanghai Sizzle: again with the lips! If the agenda for the day is more meetings (on the patio) over wings and beer (on the patio), then I’ll opt for this pigmented and creamy colour. Red always makes a statement.

Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow in Kitten: against my summer tan, I’m enjoying using this metallic sheen over the eyes all by itself.  The right amount of sparkle, I’d pair this with a hint of a black line.  Kitten is the perfect peachy pink nude for the eye.

Anastasia Pro Pencil + DipBrow Pomade: this is a one-two punch for the brows. I’m not one to do completely different brows, but instead prefer to give them a natural fill but still polished. With these two products I can achieve that look easily. The Pro Pencil is great for priming the eyes before shadow too. Bonus: Anastasia is coming back to Murale! It’s also available at Sephora!

Almay Smart  Shade CC Luminous Primer: when the temperature is right, I can make do without foundation or powder, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want my skin to look even. I’ve been using the primer before I head out the door. My skin looks brighter and healthier instantly. Plus it has SPF! (Yay!)

The Body Shop Vitamin E Aqua Boost Sorbet: you know that refreshing feeling of applying a cool, rich face cream after a day out and how it makes the skin feel relaxed and pampered. Well, this cream is it except it’s lightweight and mattifying so you can wear it before bed AND in the morning throughout the whooooole day. Um. Yes please!

NARS Nail Polish in Zakynthos+Shameless Red: a good mani-pedi during sandals+tank top season is essential. NARS has a new set of polishes available this August, that will not only look great now … but transition well into Fall 2014.   Zakynthos is my go-to neutral and Shameless Red is my “accent”.  All the new colours to come are fabulous, but what sets NARS new polishes apart from the rest : THE BRUSH! I love the rounded flat brush – its made painting nails mistake proof!

Urban Decay’s Lipstick in Mrs. Mia Wallace: again with the lips! But for a good reason. A statement red lip is always in season, hot or cold. In honour of the classic cult favourite movie, PULP FICTION, Urban Decay released the perfect creamy red bringing to life Mrs. Mia Wallace. How can a red lip not look awesome with the perfect white tank and and denim short combo?
