Take these three beauty items with you into 2020 …

It’s a common feeling to want to bring in a whole bunch of “NEW” into the new year. Most people are gung ho to renew, refresh, and reinvent, and often times this comes with the idea of tossing out the old and buying (or adopting) a bunch of new. Unreasonable? No. Cathartic? Absolutely.

This being a beauty blog, new year for me is about bringing in or trying a new look or style; tossing expired or dated makeup; and changing up my routine. It’s fun, and exciting, and gives me a total sense of self-care.

Bit whether you plan to start cracking down on a strict skincare routine, or revamping yourself out of a makeup rut, here are three beauty items to take with you into 2020 …

1. An effective skin serum : I swear by skin serums. I’m currently alternating between two (one for day and one for night) and the results are delightful. My skin has never behaved better. You may be tempted to bring in and try a new skincare system for 2020, but hang on to your serum – especially if you found one that really works for you. Whether you’re about to embark on a seven-step regimen OR plan to Marie Kondo your routine into a simple three items, make sure your serum stays a part of it.

2. A luminizing base : Nothing says a fresh new year of beauty than a base that reflects the same thing – freshness. If you’re the type who hangs on to different formulations, be sure to keep a lightweight, luminizing base in your rotation. It could be a foundation, a BB cream, or a tinted moisturizer, but as long as it makes your skin look dewy and glowing – it’s a keeper. Apply the lightest layer on the days you don’t need much makeup, and dust a setting powder only where you need it most. It’s a softer diffused look that always looks healthy.

3. A feel-good lip colour : It can be red, fuchsia, or shimmery pink – the choice is yours. But a feel good lip colour, something that makes you feel like you’re pulled together, is a MUST KEEP. Statement lip colour is a total look on its on and so much easier to achieve than any other look, e.g. liquid liner, a smokey eye, perfectly symmetrical and blended contour and highlight. Right? The trick : make sure the lips are prepped and primed before applying lip colour for the best finished look.

How to have great makeup, every day …

You can spend as much as $250 dollars on your everyday makeup essentials like foundation, concealer and mascara, but that doesn’t guarantee that your endgame makeup will look like the megabucks you spent.

Great makeup actually starts the night before with the right skin prep, and if you aren’t practising these three tips just yet … the new year is the perfect time to start!

  1. Cleanse and moisturize every night. Your skin needs to breathe and repair every night while you get your shuteye! As much as it sounds like a broken record, I’ll say it again : remove your makeup and apply your serums and moisturizer. Giving your skin what it needs to recuperate before bed means a well-prepared complexion in the morning! Think soft skin, non-existent eye bags, and plump lips!
  2. Skip cleansing in the morning, but repeat the moisturizer. Avoid stripping your skin of its natural oils in the morning which can dry out your skin and create problems for your foundation application. Rinsing your face with water to wake up is fine, but skip the cleanser or soap. After rinsing, follow-up with a lightweight, daytime moisturizer and apply some eye cream (firming or brightening – pick your poison!) and lip balm. Give it time to sink in before starting your makeup application.
  3. Prime the skin and work in layers. If you have textured skin or are concerned about uneven tone or discolouration, a targeted primer can help for a more even makeup application. Apply a light layer before foundation, and be sure to wait a beat to allow the primer to set the skin. When applying foundation, start off with a light first layer working your way from the centre of the face outward. Blend well! Just like your primer, give it some time before adding another layer of foundation or moving on to concealer . Repeat your layers until you get your desired coverage.

31 days to a prettier 2017 : eat your greens …

Diet and complexion go hand in hand. The healthier the diet, the healthier the body, the healthier the skin. And healthy skin and beauty are hand in hand.

Day 23 : January 23

Get your salad on and eat a little cleaner.

Earlier in this 31-day guide, I told you that hot water and lemon is one of my favourite ways to wake up my skin in the morning. Another way to keep my skin in check and looking bright is eating a cleaner diet.

I’m not going to sit her and tell you to ditch everything humane and enjoyable to eat like pizza and nachos and french fries … but I am going to ask you to have salads more often … or a vegan pizza … or more avocado mash instead of Skippy’s peanut butter on your toast. A plant based diet consisting of more vegetables and fruits is a sure fire way to get your skin going in the right direction for anti-acne, anti-aging, and anti-anything you hate about your skin.

My favourite ways to get a cleaner diet without feeling like I’m sacrificing :

  • I make sure at least one meal a day is a healthy salad, (and by healthy salad I do not mean a taco salad – not all salads are equal).
  • Everything I drink throughout the day is water, but to keep me sane, I allow myself one iced tea (or other flavoured drink) a day.
  • If I want something that’s not so clean … like chicken wings … I’ll make them at home from scratch rather than buying a frozen box of them or eating out at a restaurant.
  • I prepare snacks in advance. I always laughed at this piece of advice when I read it in fitness magazines because truth be told, no one needs to prepare a Kit Kat in advance; however, since choosing to eat cleaner including cleaner snacking options, having a small Tupperware of almonds in my purse nixes cravings for anything processed.
  • I forgive myself when I fall out of line. This is key. So what if you  dug into that bowl of macaroni and cheese you prepared for your children? It’s okay … next meal is a whole new meal.

TIP : Meal prepping is hard to start, I know, because I try to try it out every single week and never do it. However, if you can at least think ahead to the next day and have a loose plan for what you’re going to eat … chances are you will make smarter choices when it comes to your meals.

HOMEWORK : Google recipes for easy to make clean meals.  You don’t have to go all Jamie Oliver on it … but get an idea of what some of the key ingredients are and some simple methods for making veggies or clean meals taste decadent.
