fresh year, fresh start: the glance

December 31, 2012By stephanie

They say the eyes are the window to the soul … perhaps … but I happen to think that they are the best feature to have fun with and their main purpose is to be adorned in shades of greens, purples and your basic black.

In the 2013 we will see a trend towards the noticeably lined eye – a superb way to add pops of colour to the face (alternate between bold lip and bold eye) and to step outside your black, brown, neutral comfort zone.

Clinique Cream Shaper in Eygptian

It is a very thin line between a creamy pencil that glides over the lash line easily but also stays put once applied – I am sure we have all fallen victim to unsightly ring around the eyes once or twice or plenty of times. For me, this pencil, once set properly, transfers very VERY little to the lower lash line and stays pigmented throughout the day with no touch-up. Eygptian is a dark bronzy green which I find is a happy middle between the wearability of your common black but brings you into 2013 by adding a hint of unexpected colour. Available at The Bay and select Sephora.

NARS Eyeliner Stylo in Atlantic

Liquid lines speak trouble for most, but with practice, a liquid line in an electric colour is always gorgeous. The great thing about liquid pens like these are that they are much easier to maneuver than liquid liner brushes. NARS Atlantic is a beautiful deep blue that gives off all the crispness of black but without the boring. Apply it close to the lash line and amp it up with plenty of mascara. Available at The Bay and Murale.

MAC Powerpoint or Technakohl Liners

If colour is the last thing you are afraid off and all you want to do is play … um … well, it isn’t that hard to get lost in MAC’s array of pencils. You will find a great selection of bright blues and greens – very trendable for 2013 – and you’ll just have to decide between a creamier application (Technakohl) or lock it in waterproof (Powerpoint). Affordable, you can easily build a liner wardrobe with breaking the budget. Available at MAC freestanding stores or The Bay.

fresh year, fresh start: the glow …

Everyone can benefit from a bit of blush, so it’s essential to add one or two or several to your vanity table to perk you up.

Blush can come in many formulations and finishes, and they can be fun to play with, but here are some essentials to build your makeup wardrobe.

Stila Covertible Colour

For me, I believe cream colour gives the most natural effect, so I have a large selection of creams sitting around. I like the Stila Covertible Colour because they have no shimmer to them which makes them wearable for any occassion. It’s a portable compact (plus you can add some colour to the lips) and my favourites are Gerbera and Lillium for the most natural look and if I want a pop of colour – Gladiola. You can apply this with two fingers and blend, or a sponge – your choice. Available at select Sephoras and Shopper’s Drug Marts.

NARS Blush

Okay, everyone wears Orgasm and while I agree it’s a great colour – I actually no longer wear it myself. In fact I prefer some of the other colours like Deep Throat and Desire. I turn to these finely milled powder blushes to build intensity over my cream blush and also, when a little bit of highlight and shimmer is appropriate. I also really like Luster so look into that colour as well! NARS is available at Murale and Holt Renfrew.

YSL Blush Radiance

Mixing and matching blush is not for everyone – but sometimes mixing two colours can give off the most natural effect. This YSL compact allows you to swirl your brush over two colours before sweeping it onto your face for a well-blended flush. The glitzy gold compact is a perk me up in and of itself too! Available in 8 shades, I prefer No. 2 for everyday and No. 8 for when perky and pink calls my name! Available at Sephora, Murale, and Holt Renfrew.

… and the must-have for blush …

A blush brush!! You will have plenty of choices when deciding on a blush brush, but it is a must (holy crap – tongue twister). A proper blush brush is essential for exceptional and undetectable application and blending – so factor that into your budget if you don’t have one!

fresh year, fresh start: the skin …

When a the opportunity arrives to start fresh, I jump on it. The start of a new week, a new month, a new year … it’s always a marker for me to try something new.

Without a doubt, you are probably the exact same way. With the onset of 2013, let’s focus on beauty products that can help you start fresh!

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB

Available in five shades, this lightweight but longlasting BB cream keeps your skin looking real, dewy and healthy. It’s perfects the skin without masking it so you’ll start your day (and new year) with brighter, smoother skin without the weight. Complete with SPF 30, this BB cream is under $11 CDN and can be found at WalMart, Shoppers DrugMart and Rexall.

Urban Decay Eye Primer Potion

Never forget the skin over the eyelids. Even out the entire face by adding a bit of this nude based primer over the lids to where alone for an flawless look (it will hide the tiny veins and slight coloring on the eyes) or under your eye makeup to prevent creasing and to let eyeshadows show their true colours. Urban Decay does carry tinted/colored versions of this primer, but nude is always best! Under $25 CDN at Sephora and select Shoppers Drug Mart.

MAC Blot Pressed Powder

Sometimes, perfect looking skin requires that you touch up throughout the day. MAC Blot Powder is a makeup artist favourite that can help to reduce shine without adding any extra “cake” to the face. It let’s your skin radiate through without the oiliness. Just $29 CDN at MAC Stores (free-standing and at The Bay).

Laura Mercier Undercover Pot

Every girl needs a concealer she can trust to do its job and stay put. This one gives you three useful products in one travel-friendly pot. A yellow toned concealer for marks and blemishes, a creamier peachier-toned concealer to mask dark circles and discoloration; and underneath a yellow based powder to set and brighten. Available at Holt Renfrew and Sephora for approximately $40 CDN.

the fresh list: new at BlushPretty …

December 21, 2012By stephanie

Nothing is more exciting than when we receive new stock at the studio. I am so pleased to announce that we have brought on three more brands at the boutique and I bet you will love them.

We actually received LippyGirl about two weeks ago and when the team comes in and starts to play with the testers, they go bonkers. These vegan lipsticks provide all the colour you want but all the natural goodness you know is best for you. With a selection of favourable and wearable colours, you are bound to find a colour that suits you. We are honoured to be one of the only boutiques in Toronto to carry this Vancouver based brand, so do stop by to find your perfect vegan lip colour. We are loving Fancy Pants and Boss Lady!

Face Oils are the not so newest way to hydrate and treat the skin, but some beautythusiasts are skeptical (wouldn’t oil makeme MORE oily???) If you aren’t on board yet, buy your ticket and jump on. We’ll be your guide and chat you up about how and why face oils work and to prove our point, we are bringing in a small selection of Toronto powerhouse Pure+Simple’s top oils. Stay connected in the new year as well when we plan to carry their brilliant face powders and concealers. Promise!

SW Basics (formerly Sprout)

EEK! We are equally over the moon about this one and we think you will be too. This brand, recently featured in O Magazine and name dropped by Gwyneth on keeps its ingredients list to just 5 natural ingredients. Yeah … just five. As you may (or may not, but now you do) I love NYC (two trips twice a year) and now, I have brought a little bit of NYC home. Based out of Brooklyn, SW Basics is gentle for the skin but gets the job done. We will be carrying their cleanser, toner and their makeup remover starting today and in the new year plan to expand.

So there you go – plenty of reasons to visit me at the studio. We will be open on the 27th and 28th (Boxing Week deals folks) and throughout the start of January. Also, feel free to check out as of December 22, 2013 when our Sprout and Pure+simple products will be available online!

Happy shopping and Ho Ho Ho!
