There is something about the flow of a beautiful Sunday wedding.
Calm, relaxed, peaceful.

This gorgeous bride’s wedding took place at the beginning of March, and while there was a chill in the air, her day was bright and sunny. And I’m not surprised about that. Why?

Because her family deserved to have a beautiful day!
Such sweet people, friendly and warm, filled with excitement for the bride.
You could feel the positive energy in the room. It’s like the sun had no choice but to shine bright and just be there.

We had a blast working with the bride, her wedding planner/aunt : Bliss Events,
and her family and friends.

Our next spotlight features makeup artist Natalija Filinova, who joined our team last September.

Name:  Natalija Filinova

I joined BP in: Fall 2013

I got into hair and/or makeup artistry because… I have been wearing makeup since the age of 15. I started because I wanted to hide my blemishes, but over the years it became a hobby. I love spending time in front of a mirror perfecting my looks. When I moved to a new area, I kept walking by a beauty school that offered a Makeup Artistry Diploma – it didn’t take much thought for me to just go in and enroll.

My favourite part about being a hair/makeup artist… I feel like I was meant to do this. I love making someone feel beautiful, or seeing them in awe when they look at themselves in the mirror.  I love learning and shopping for the endless amount of makeup products out there.  I even love cleaning my kit…that says a lot because I hate cleaning!

My dream celebrity client: I have a couple, but I am going to say Kat Von D.

My must-share beauty tip: Right now the dewy fresh look is in.  To get glowing skin, try to mix in a luminizer cream/gel with your foundation, or apply it as a base on your cheek bones, and your t-zone area.  My favorite luminizer is the Make Up For Ever Uplight in #22. As blush, use a cream blush or a light powder, and apply on the apples of your cheek (don’t over do it). This is a simple, natural and beautiful look to pull off!

I love to experiment with makeup, but I often save things like glitter eyeshadow, coloured liner and false lashes for weekends and outings. My day-to-day makeup routine has taken many years to perfect (it used to consist of off-colour foundation and racoon eyeliner – it was high school and I was a moody teenager, after all), but I have it down to an efficient system now that pulls together a simple look fit for the office that lasts on even the longest of days.

The products themselves vary, but the staples are the same. I’m constantly experimenting with new products, which I’m sure isn’t recommended for keeping your skin healthy, but depending on my budget and what I’ve been reading on my favourite blogs, I tend to mix it up and try new things.

Let’s start with the base. In my rotation, I’ve always got a primer, concealer, liquid foundation, blush, bronzer, setting powder and/or pressed powder. The magic word for me when it comes to choosing anything face related is matte. I have got a very oily t-zone and I am such an easy sell if you tell me a product will make it stop!

Above, I have the following: Rimmel London Stay Matte Primer and Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation, Benefit Erase Paste Concealer (the HG of brightening concealers – perfect for under eyes), my trusty Lise Watier Portfolio Professional Correctors in Normal (my other concealer HG – everything you could ever need to perfect your face is here for redness, undereyes, contouring, etc.) Almay Smart Shade blush in Pink, and Kat Von D Lock It Powder Foundation (which I use to set). Not pictured above (but below) is my Essence Sun Club Matt Bronzing Powder. It might look like a lot, but these products create the clean slate for my eye makeup and give my cheeks a little bit of definition.

Once I’ve got that done, I move on to my eyes where I use the following:

Make Up For Ever Aqua Brow Corrector to fill and shape my brows, NYX Studio Liner liquid liner in Black for my signature cat eye, and Benefit They’re Real! Mascara to give my lashes the oomph they need to make my baby blues pop (a product I haven’t strayed from since its launch in 2011). I skip eyeshadow on a daily basis and usually opt for a bold, red lip instead.

Finally, if I’m expecting it to be warm or an especially long day, I finish off with a few spritzes of Urban Decay’s Deslick Setting Spray to keep oil at bay (I take all the help I can get).

If you can believe it, my whole routine takes about 15 minutes tops. I can wake up at 7:30 a.m. and be showered, changed, made up and out the door in half an hour if need be without skipping a single step of what’s shown above.

As far as carrying a makeup bag with me, I typically don’t – except for my bag of lipsticks of course. I might throw in some concealer if I’m hiding a blemish or my setting powder during the summer, but for the most part I opt for products that will last and give me great results.

And there you have it – what’s in my makeup bag! Do you use any of these products on a daily basis?

scene+heard : essie’s illusion ombré

March 25, 2014By DJMC

Last week, I had the opportunity attend an Essie Canada workshop featuring Lead Nail Artist Rita Remark at the Ritz Carlton Toronto with Elaine of Toronto Beauty Reviews and one of BlushPretty’s very own on March 17, 2014.

This workshop gave us a sneak peek at Rita’s nail look before it hit the runway in LINE Knitwear’s show that Monday evening as part of World MasterCard Fashion Week.

The look of the event was called illusion ombré. All of the attendees were able to customize the look with two colours of their choosing – I chose Lots of Lux and Bikini so Teeny. If you want to take a crack at creating the look yourself, the 4-step instructions can be found here.

Rita did my left hand and I attempted to do my right hand. You can definitely tell who the expert is! With practice I’m hoping that I’ll be an expert with the illusion ombré look.

Will this be a look you try?
