loved by laura : imPRESS manicure

October 30, 2014By DJMC

I recently had the pleasure of reliving my girlie childhood memories with Broadway Nails imPRESS manicure – specifically with some limited-edition Halloween tips just in time for this weekend! I remember being a young child and enjoying painting my nails and playing with fake nails, and these certainly took me back.

They look like gel nails and adhere for about a week. Each package includes a prep pad (a rubbing alcohol pad) and 24 press on nails in various sizes – great for making sure you find the best fit for each tip.

The idea of press on nails is fun and easy, but with great beauty comes a price and in this case, it was a tough removal process. You are supposed to pull them off by lifting from the sides, but I’d recommend applying polish remover between the nail and the press on tip and leaving it for 1 minute. It makes for an overall more pleasant experience, since peeling them off was a task (I’m lucky enough to have thick and hard nails, but I imagine if they were brittle and thin it would be worse). Another thing to note is not all nail beds are shaped similarly and the shape options are limited to what’s in the package, so you may also find you have to file them to size.

All in all, they look great and deliver high-impact results. This is definitely a product that I would use for special occasions. You can pick them up at your nearest Walmart for under $10 – they definitely make it easy to get into the Halloween spirit if you’re not into wearing a costume!

musings from morgan : halloween inspiration

October 29, 2014By DJMC

We’re just days away from one of the biggest holidays that calls for dressing up in full costume, and of course hair & makeup are part of the package when it comes to creating the perfect look.

There are so many ways to amp things up for Halloween – false eyelashes, contact lenses, hair extensions and wigs, unlikely uses of traditional products like lipstick and eyeliner, and so much more.

I wanted to share some of my fave looks from around the web to inspire your Halloween costumes this week – don’t forget to share your looks with us on social media either! We love to see creative ways to use makeup and tools to create the ultimate, all-out costumes and disguises.

Pop Art/Comic Book Makeup

This has been an increasingly popular look in recent years, but for good reason! It’s such a fun way to try something different – it’s not like you can realistically get away with it any old time of the year. A quick search for “comic book makeup” on Pinterest will give you all kinds of links to tutorials and variations of the look. It’s also an easy, cheaper way to do a costume since you don’t have to go too out of the ordinary with your clothing.

Cute Animals

Okay…perhaps you’re noticing a trend. Nothing too scary yet, right? I’ll admit it, I tend to favour the cute and fun costume ideas over the scary and gory kinds. I’m just not big on all the blood & guts! I love simple looks like cats or doe-eyed deer, and this one is just stunning if you ask me (hell, I’ll wear that cat-eye any day of the week)! This is a good option that is really simple and easy to pull together in a pinch.

Sugar Skull

The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrated Oct. 31, Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 to remember and pray for friends and family who have passed away – now that’s my kind of take on Halloween. Part of the holiday involves sugar skulls, and the look has become a common Halloween “costume.” I love this idea because who doesn’t want to create a totally customized, creative and visually stunning look on Halloween? This ain’t your average face paint folks – this is a look that gives you plenty of freedom to do what you feel! A quick search for “day of the dead makeup” or “sugar skull makeup” will bring up all kinds of inspiration.

What are your beauty plans for Halloween? We’d love to hear what you’ve got up your sleeve!

loved by laura : the humble sponge

October 28, 2014By DJMC

It is a known fact that looking beautiful requires radiant, glowing and healthy skin; however my quest to acquire such glorious skin took years.  From my tweens to adulthood, I purchased micro bead cleansers to expensive imported soaps that only left my skin feeling dry and unfulfilled.  This unsatisfying routine stopped a few years ago when I discovered the humble sponge.

Let’s face it – it is hard to run away from the fact that “we are what we eat” and that 8 glasses of water a day gives us amazing skin, but what we also can do is take care of it by exfoliating.

The sponge scrubs off dead and old skin cells that eventually build up and clog your pores.  Our body’s skin undergoes a shedding cycle every 28-45 days and the sponge helps to evenly remove these old layers.  Once the dead skin cells are removed, fresh skin is revealed.  Benefits of exposing the new skin layer is that it evens out skin tone, allows the skin to breath, unclogs pores, removes white heads and prevents in grown hairs.

Organic sponges are fascinating – not only are they sea creatures, but they are a renewable and sustainable source.  Unlike synthetic sponges, real sponges when dried for commercial use are antibacterial.  They are very low maintenance, easy to pack and look great in any bathroom.

How to use it?  Once or twice a week, lather up your hands with your favourite facial cleanser.  Evenly apply the suds all over your face.  With a small dry or wet sponge start scrubbing your face in gentle circular motions.

Never forget to use a gentle toner and moisturizer after each session! You will definitely see a difference.

You can purchase these sponges at the grass roots store or online at $8.99 for a package of four unbleached facial sponges.

musings from morgan : mary kay winter wishes shimmerific

October 21, 2014By DJMC

It’s that time of year again…gift sets and ideas are rolling out, and Mary Kay has lots of great options for those of you looking to fill out your lists.

Mary Kay has put out a really fun shower gel and body lotion gift set with their new limited edition holiday fragrance, the Winter Wishes Shimmeriffic Shower Gel and Shimmeriffic Body Lotion Set. The scent comes across as something more suitable for more mature women so think aunts, mothers, mother-in-laws, grandmother’s, etc. for this particular fragrance. It’s a powerful fruity scent with a hint of musk, and a powerful lady deserves to wear it!

The gift set comes in a festive tin (which can easily be topped with ribbon and a bow if you’re not into wrapping, and used after the fact for all kinds of things) containing a Shimmerific Shower Gel and Shimmerific Body Lotion. Both products definitely have shimmer going on, but don’t worry – it’s not overkill, making it a suitable way to turn things up a bit for holiday parties.

These products are really fun because the shimmer component adds a layer of excitement, especially if you know someone will be hitting the party circuit and can rock the extra sparkle with confidence. Everyone needs a little glitter in their lives over the holidays, and this is a great way to make a subtle statement.

The set is available through Mary Kay at $27.00 CAD and is only available over the holidays – visit their website for more info on how to purchase.
