made up with mer : physicians formula organic care CC curl & care mascara

January 14, 2015By DJMC

I feel like if you asked 100 women what they would want on a deserted island, many of them would say something along the line of food/water, loved ones (a bit selfish, no?) and mascara. Going out the door without mascara for many women is like going out without clothes on (and it is far, far too cold for that!).

I am not going to lie to you – I really can’t stand it when I see a packaged product with too many promises….or even too much wordiness in general. I consider myself intelligent enough to not fall at the mercy of plumed up promises for my pennies. Or, perhaps I have fallen for these promises one too many times (more likely) and have become wise to the gimmicks. All that rant said, I took one look at the Physicians Formula Organic Care CC Curl & Care Mascara and thought, “Really?” I am skeptical. It has a photo of a lash curler with a line through it, and it seems a bit dramatic to say goodbye to my beloved curler.

What I did love about the packaging is that it highlighted the fact that this product is free of harsh chemicals and has a silicone brush. To be honest, the package is pretty wordy and the promises are big. So, does it deliver? The answer is yes and no.

Packaging – A bit wordy with too many promises, but such is the standard in the industry so I will let that slide :)

Pigmentation – Nice rich black that provided good lash coverage. Defined lashes well.

Brush – Nice curl, great flexibility, easy to apply.

Does it clump? – No. This mascara goes on smooth and separates lashes well.

Does it transfer? – A tiny bit of transfer on the bottom lashes but nothing close to raccoon status.

Does it flake? – No.  I found it quite long wearing.

Price – 15.79 (or less depending on where you buy)

Where to buy – Drugstore, Grocery store or online at

Worth it? – If you are looking for a gentle mascara without harsh chemicals that is easy to apply and gives a nice natural look then yes, it is lovely.  If you are looking for a mascara to curl your lashes…. keep looking (and perhaps give up because that seems kind of impossible, no?).

Bonus – Physicians Formula does not test on animals. Love that! I would actually buy it again for that reason alone.

musings from morgan : i love… body butter

December 17, 2014By DJMC

Winter often comes with some negatives when it comes to skincare – the cold, harsh weather can take a toll on everything from our cheeks to our arms to our legs, and many of us are often reaching for the moisturizer more and more as the temperature drops.

A mainstay in my arsenal of winter weapons? Body butter. Heavier than a typical moisturizer, body butter is perfect for legs and arms when you’re experiencing extra dryness. I recently tried European brand i love… body butter offering in Raspberry & Blackberry, which includes coconut oil and shea butter to help you achieve soft nourished skin.

My first impression of the product was “oh my god is it ever scented.” It actually smells like candy. For me, this was a bit of a turn-off since I often opt for fragrance-free products or one with softer scents like vanilla. The raspberry/blackberry combo comes through quite strong, so if you’re into that sort of thing this would be perfect for you.

When it came to the product itself, it definitely did a good job of moisturizing without feeling greasy or heavy on the skin, but for a body butter I expected a bit more in terms of thickness – it felt more like a regular body lotion instead of a butter.

I think this product would work well if you don’t require heavy-duty hydration and you like fruity products that really deliver on scent. At $9.99 it’s a decent buy and you can get it online at

A few weeks ago I was invited to attend the Kiss Nails 2015 product preview and was very excited, to say the least.

The 2015 line will consist of a few great new products which Gina Edwards, Celebrity Manicurist introduced to us. The new range includes

  • KISS Salon Gel French Nail kit;
  • imPRESS Accent Press-on Manicure by Broadway Nails;
  • KISS Salon Secrets Nail Art Glue;
  • KISS Salon Secrets Rococo Veil Kit;
  • Kiss Salon Secrets Luxe Accents; and
  • Kiss Salon Secrets Nail art Pro Tool Kit.

The collection features several items that I just can’t wait to try out like the awesome new impress nail designs and the nail art kit. I was lucky enough to get a complimentary mani at the event, using the Gel French nail kit (available in different lengths and thicknesses), the Rococo Veil kit inspired by french art and a gem from the Luxe Accents kit.

The nails felt comfortable and looked amazing. I also got to walk away with a swag bag and I can’t wait to play! I’m most excited about the nail art collection with the new nail art glue. Gems and jewels have never been easier to apply with this jelly textured product which is the first of its kind and professional grade quality! The glue was designed specifically for nail art and long lasting hold, so now we can all be pro manicurists at home.

Kiss and Broadway Nails also have great Youtube channels where you can check out tutorials and more!

recos from regina : olay total effects 7-in-one cc cream

November 4, 2014By DJMC

As I get older one of my skin concerns is fighting any signs of aging.

Aging?? Me?? Yes, my youthful looking self is concerned with my skin as I am getting older. It is bound to happen after all! Now when I look in the mirror up close, I am beginning to see fine lines, dark circles and wrinkles under my eyes.

To address these concerns many women like myself have, Olay came out with Total Effects 7 in One Dark Circle Minimizing CC Cream. This product promises instant skin perfecting coverage and correction to reduce the appearance of darkness under the eyes – it certainly had my attention.

What caught my eye right away that it had a built-in brush applicator. The applicator is a click brush so as you click it, the CC cream is dispensed. The bristles were soft enough that it didn’t bother my skin as I was using it to apply the cream, and it blended very well into my skin.

The end result: the product moisturized under my eyes to help the dryness around it, and while I didn’t find it reduced the appearance of dark circles, it helped brighten up my under-eye area and it helped even out my skintone.

Olay Total Effects 7 in One Dark Circle Minimizing CC Cream can be found at Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall Drug Stores for $32.99.

recos from regina : almay intense i-Color

October 7, 2014By DJMC

Trying eyeshadows that come with more than one colour is a fun experience for me, since even though I have a love of beauty products, I will admith I’m not the most experienced with eyeshadow and am not as savvy about deciding which colours go best together. I generally stick to one eyeshadow colour, black liquid eyeliner and black mascara.

Almay has given ladies like me an entire line to help us out, intense i-color. This line consists of eyeshadows, eyeliners and mascaras that are made for every eye colour.

I had the opportunity to try out the intense i-color eyeshadow in 401 smoky-i for brown eyes and liquid liner in 021 Purple Amethyst. This line is great because the eyeshadow palette is shaped like an eye to show you step-by-step how to apply the product.

The first step is the darkest shade (bottom shade in brown) which goes from the lash to the crease and to be blended upwards. Second is the medium shade (centre shade in shimmering light purple) that goes above the crease, and it’s suggested you blend for a “smouldering effect.”

Finally, the lightest colour (top colour in a light shimmering cream colour) is to be “applied on the brow bone and/or corners of eyes to highlight.” Once complete, you’ve successfully applied an easy smokey eye – just like that!

The liquid liner is great too as it went with the colours of the eyeshadows. This was the first time that I used a purple liquid eyeliner in place of my usual black liner, and it was nice to break out of my comfort zone!

What I really liked about these products were the colours in the palette, the staying power and the price. I generally stick to neutral brown eyeshadows as it’s in my comfort zone, so the purple was a really nice departure from that.

Performance-wise, the product stayed on my eyes for the whole day at work and I received many compliments from staff, customers and my own kids.

I found the price to be reasonable at $9.99 CDN. You can find them at Wal-Mart, Target, Shoppers Drug Mart, Rexall, Loblaws and The Real Canadian Superstore.
